LOUISBURG-- Louisburg High School's commencement festivities were done in under an hour.
But, that wasn't indicative of the journey graduates began four years ago -- culminating in a march across the stage on a pristine football field to receive their diplomas.
"Congratulations," said Louisburg High Principal Melissa Thomas who, like the graduating class, arrived at Louisburg High four years ago.

County, schools compromise on budget

LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Board of Commissioners approved an $101 million budget that lowers the tax rate, provides employees with a bonus and includes a compromise that provides the school system with more funding than the county manager originally proposed.
Superintendent Rhonda Schuhler said the school system will need to "dip into our [savings account] ... to support basic needs."

Traffic calming. It's a term I think I first heard last month -- and again last week during a Youngsville town board meeting.
Essentially, it's just an "umbrella" term for looking at ways to slow down traffic, reduce crashes, ease traffic congestion and make neighborhoods safer for pedestrians.

Three of Bunn's top four honorees at the event were seniors -- Keagan Osika, Lavadous Bolden and Tre' Artis.
Osika was tabbed as BHS' Female Athlete of the Year after starring in volleyball and track and field this past season for the Ladycats.

LOUISBURG -- Despite injury and the pandemic, Stephen Falkner never let go of his dream to wrestling on the collegiate level.
Falkner, a senior at Louisburg High School, recently signed a letter-of-intent to continue his mat career for Queens College.
Queens, located in Charlotte, is moving up to the Division I level for the coming year and will compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Youngsville creates social district; tries to 'calm' traffic

YOUNGSVILLE -- After taking steps aimed at "calming" traffic in town, Youngsville commissioners created a social district downtown in an effort to attract more people to the community.
The downtown social district came after a group of the community's downtown merchants requested it and a change in state law allowed it.

County's fireworks destroyed in fire

LOUISBURG -- A fire and deadly explosion near La Grange last week has put the full extent of Franklin County's Independence Day festivities in question.
According to published reports, a man identified as Randy Herring was burning off a wheat field the afternoon of June 13 when the fire got out of control. The fire made its way to a nearby building that contained commercial fireworks, which exploded -- killing him.

2 early voting sites okayed

RALEIGH -- The State Board of Elections agreed to meet in the middle, approving an early voting schedule that was a compromise from a split decision made by the local board.
On June 7, the Franklin County Board of Elections agreed to open only one site for early voting for the second primary, maintaining hours from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Man run down by car; woman is arrested, also held on murder warrant

LOUISBURG -- A Franklin County woman who ran over a man with her car remains in Franklin County Jail -- awaiting an unrelated murder charge out of New York.
Louisburg police responded to the parking lot of Moss Foods the morning of May 31 to find Donald Spruill suffering from injuries sustained in a vehicle incident.
Upon investigation, authorities allege Sarrueche Valentina Rose ran him over in a 2018 Nissan Altima she was driving.

Burg council gets a preview of 'Falls' project

LOUISBURG -- The town council got its first, first-hand account of a project that, if it is built, could be transformative for the community.
Called Louisburg Falls, the huge new multi-use development -- probably the largest of its type ever proposed in Franklin County's history -- will be the focus of a public hearing before the town council on Monday, June 20 -- and will give residents a chance to comment on the project.
