4-H Livestock
fun show planned
Franklin County youth, age 5 -18 years old, are invited to participate in the county's 14th Annual "FUN" Livestock Show, Thursday, Aug. 20, at Wildwynn Stables in Youngsville. Area youth who love animals and would like to be judged exhibiting their animals are encouraged to participate, organizers said.
The animals will be judged by two expert livestock volunteers and will be evaluated on showmanship, knowledge and skills along with animal husbandry for their species of animal. Youth must join 4-H in order to participate and the North Carolina 4-H showmanship rules and regulations must be followed. Rabbits, poultry, goats, cattle and sheep may be shown. Youth will receive ribbons along with monetary prizes and gifts from agribusinesses in the county.

Farmers Market open Fridays
The Franklin County Farmers Market in Shannon Village Shopping Center, Louisburg, is open Fridays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Watermelons, cantaloupe, sweet corn, butter beans, purple hull peas, squash, snaps, local wildflower honey, fresh-baked sourdough bread, cinnamon rolls, brownies, cookies, pasture-raised pork, chicken, beef, and farm-fresh eggs are usually available as are unique handmade crafts and beautiful plants. Seed-starting workshop slated
Join Cooperative Extension Thursday, Aug. 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for a hands-on workshop to learn how to take your seeds from start to transplant!
Participants will learn how to make a seed starting mix and make their own tray of freshly planted seeds to take home. There is a $10 fee. To register go to go.ncsu.edu/seedstarting-workshop.

Church women planning blood drive
The United Women of Faith of Louisburg United Methodist Church is hosting a blood drive on Monday, Aug. 24, from 1 until 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the church.

The American Red Cross has announced it is experiencing a severe blood shortage and recently declared its second-ever blood supply crisis after donations fell to a four-year summer low recently.
The Red Cross is now reporting that is has less that a one-day supply of type O blood.

Louisburg Lions serving spaghetti
The Louisburg Lions Club will have a spaghetti dinner today, Aug. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. The take-out only dinner pick up location is at Lancaster Funeral Home in Louisburg. Cost is $10 per plate.

Franklinton Lions to serve pancakes
The Franklinton Lions Club is planning a pancake supper on Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Lions Club building on Chavis Street.
Serving will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and is eat in or carry out.

County's Labor Day schedule revealed
Franklin County officials have announced their schedule for the Labor Day holiday.
•All libraries will be closed Saturday, Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 7.
•The solid waste transfer station will be open Monday, Sept 7, from 7 a.m. until noon but all convenience centers will be open that Monday 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
•The county airport will be open on Monday, Sept. 7
All other Franklin County offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 7.

Brodie Family Reunion
All descendants of the Brodie family will come together for a family gathering, Sept. 25 through Sept. 27.
Events include food, activities, prizes, games for the children, music, family heritage acknowledgement, and worship in unity on Sunday Morning at Perry's Missionary Baptist Church, 2269 Laurel Mill Road, Louisburg, NC (near Centerville).

Commissioners plan special meeting
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, to conduct public hearings to receive comments on two items:
•Proposed telecommunications tower on Franklin County tax parcel 006575 (North White Street);
•Proposed Utility Development agreement.
