JOHN C. PERNELL, SR.
March 22, 1929 – August 3, 2011
LOUISBURG - John C. Pernell, Sr., of Louisburg (Mapleville Community), age 82, died at his home on August 3, 2011.

Born March 22, 1929 in Franklin County, he was the son of Robert and Minnie Pernell.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Rosa P. Gilliam and Mattie P. Gupton, and brothers, Edward Pernell and Russell Pernell.

Mr. Pernell is survived by his wife, Betsy L. Pernell; son, John C. Pernell, Jr. and wife, Martha, of Charleston, South Carolina; daughter, Ellen P. Stainback and husband, Jerry, of Henderson; Granddaughters, Rebecca Stainback of Telluride, Colorado, Charlotte P. Bachman of Mansura, Louisiana, and Ellen P. Jimenez of Carlsbad, New Mexico; and three great- grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, Martha L. Mobley of Louisburg, Sally G. McDonald of Oxford, Betty P. Keel of Wake Forest, Joyce P. Valentine of Rocky Mount; nephew, Steve Pernell of Rocky Mount; and sister-in-law, Marjorie G. Leonard.

John was a life-long resident of Louisburg.  He attended Edward Best High School and Louisburg College. He retired after 30 years of service as a Cost Accountant with the Franklin County School System. Since retiring, Mr. Pernell’s greatest joy was gardening and taking care of the family farm with his wife, Betsy. He was a member of Maple Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Pernell was a former member of Louisburg Area Jaycees, Louisburg Civitans, Kiwanis, Area Red Cross, and the Louisburg Rotary Club.
The family will receive friends at the Pernell home, 402 Leonard Farm Road, Louisburg, North Carolina.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Maple Springs Baptist Church, 1938 NC Highway 56 East, Louisburg, North Carolina. A private family burial will be held at the Maple Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Maple Springs Baptist Church Grounds Fund, 1938 NC Highway 56 East, Louisburg, NC 27549.
