MILDRED SMITH
HENDERSON - Mildred Smith, 91, of Kittrell, NC, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2011 at Louisburg Manor in Louisburg, NC.

Born July 1, 1920 in Kittrell, NC, she was the daughter of the late Abner Joseph Smith and Emma Woodlief Smith.

Mildred attended Zeb Vance High School in Vance County, serving as Chief Marshall, and graduating as Salutatorian of her class.  She was also a graduate of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.  For 39 years she taught business courses in Helena, Franklinton, Warrenton, Angier, Ahoskie, Pinehurst, Nashville, Henderson, and at Louisburg College.  Enjoying an active retirement, Mildred spent time basket weaving and other crafts, tending her flower garden, engaging in senior and church activities, and visiting her family and her friends.  Over the years, she touched many lives and proudly watched the accomplishments of her former students.

Mildred was a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church and the former Kittrell Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m., at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Carolyn Roy.  A private entombment will be held prior to the service at Sunset Gardens in Henderson, NC.

Surviving family includes her nieces, Emma Joe Gray of Gastonia, NC, Coleen Ward of Lamar, SC, Jackie McNamara of Louisburg, NC, and Sandra Lynam of Leakey, TX; and her nephews, Warren Smith, Jr. of Lexington, NC and Joseph Smith, Jr., of Alexandria, VA.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis King and Eleanor Smith; and three brothers, Austin Turner Smith, Joseph Swindell Smith, and Warren Woodlief Smith.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Plank Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 507, Kittrell, NC  27544.
