BARBARA JEAN BUMGARNER
May 24, 1938 – April 15, 2012

LOUISBURG – Barbara Jean Bumgarner, 73, died Sunday, April 15, 2012. She was born May 24, 1938 to Roy and Lois Faulkner Bumgarner of Louisburg, NC.

After graduating from Meredith College, Raleigh, NC, she worked for the Department of Social Services in Roanoke, VA. Jean retired to Louisburg, NC and worked for the Dept. of Social Services and the Franklin County Health Dept. from September 1973 until retirement in September 2000. During those years she cared for many people with wisdom, kindness, devotion and compassion.  She always saw the best in everyone, never judging or criticizing the decisions of others.  In 1965, Jean traveled to Germany with two friends, Cynthia Jones and Pat Patton. While there she taught school on a military base and traveled throughout Germany on the weekends. She was a gentle and kind woman who guided, loved and protected her family.  She joined them in fun and laughter and prayed for each one.

Surviving to cherish her memory is one son, Roy Scott Bumgarner of Louisburg; grandsons, Will and Josh Bumgarner of Henderson. Jean loved and thought of the mother of her grandchildren, Wendy Wells Bumgarner, as her daughter. Also among those left to cherish memories of Jean are many cousins and friends.

Jean had a special bond with her cousin, Carolyn Pritchard Aycock, of Wake Forest.  The two of them thought of each other as “sisters” and Carolyn is deeply grieving her loss.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Louisburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Reggie Rushing officiating.  Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Louisburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM Wednesday, April 18, at Strickland Funeral Home and Crematory, 103 W. Franklin St., Louisburg.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Franklin County Habitat for Humanity, 471 Perdues Rd., Louisburg, NC 27549.

Arrangements by Strickland Funeral Home and Crematory, 103 W. Franklin St., Louisburg, NC.
