ZEBULON -- The Winston-Salem Dash used three unearned runs in the sixth inning to beat the Carolina Mudcats 5-2 on Monday afternoon at Five County Stadium in the Class A Carolina League regular season finale for both clubs.
The Mudcats finish the 2014 campaign at 62-74 while the Dash go home at 61-78.
Mike Clevinger (0-1) was solid in the loss for Carolina, relenting three runs, two earned, on six hits across 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven while walking one.
J.B. Wendelken (7-10) earned the victory for the Dash by limiting Carolina to a run on six hits over five frames. He also fanned seven.
Zach Isler recorded the final two outs for his fourth save of the campaign.
Both teams traded a run the first inning before the Dash took control in the second.
Keon Barnum doubled home the game’s first tally before the Mudcats tied it on a Luigi Rodriguez triple and a run-scoring hit from LeVon Washington.
Zach Voight put Winston-Salem back in front with his first of two doubles on the day in the second inning.
The Dash went up 5-1 in the sixth by capitalizing on a pair of errors.
Keenyn Walker singled with two out and advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error by catcher Eric Haase.
Nick Basto rolled a grounder to third that Joe Sever mishandled, allowing the run to score.
After a single by Michael Marjama, Voight doubled home both runners for a four-run advantage.
The Mudcats rallied for a run in the eighth on a single by Rodriguez and a double by Washington.
The team loaded the bases against reliever Jose Bautista in the ninth, but Isler pitched the Dash out of the jam for the victory.
Michael Peoples dealt 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief and whiffed four batters to push him over 100 strikeouts for the year.
The Carolina Mudcats are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and just completed their third season as a member of the Class A Carolina League.
The Mudcats open the 2015 season on April 9 against the Salem Red Sox at Five County Stadium.
