LOUISBURG - John Derek Gupton, 24, died tragically Tuesday evening while responding to a fire call with the Justice Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a member of Duke Memorial Baptist Church and a member of the Justice Volunteer Fire Department. He received the Order of Arrow in the Boy Scouts. John graduated from Bunn High School in 2008. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Walter Pleasants, Jr., and paternal grandfather, Bobby Lee Gupton.

A funeral service will be held 2 pm Sunday at Duke Memorial Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his parents, Tony and Jackie Gupton; maternal grandmother, Janet Spencer and husband, Harris Spencer; paternal grandmother, Alice Faye Gupton; maternal great-grandmother, Hazel Gilliam and paternal great-grandmother, Thyra Mae Bell; uncles and aunts, Ronnie and Gail Pleasants, Dexter and Karen Gupton, all of Louisburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the John Gupton Memorial Fund, c/o Justice Volunteer Fire Department, 4113 NC 581Hwy. N., Spring Hope, NC 27882.

The family received friends 6:00 - 9:00 pm Saturday at Strickland Funeral Home and Crematory, Louisburg, and other times at the home.
