SUSIE THARRINGTON PERDUE

GREENVILLE, NC - Mrs. Susie Tharrington Perdue, 96, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 AM in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Kelly Smith and John Ormond. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum in Pinewood Memorial Park.

A native of Warrenton, NC, she lived the past thirty years in Louisburg before moving to Greenville in 2013 to be with her sister. Mrs. Perdue was the daughter of the late Wiley Adkins and Geneva Hamlet Tharrington of Warrenton, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman H. Perdue of Louisburg; her brother and his wife, Eden R. and Patricia G. Tharrington; her brother, Clyde A. Tharrington; her sisters, and their husbands, Annie and T. Edres Overby and Eva and J.I. Jackson; and her brother-in-law, David H. Mayo, Sr. Additionally, she was preceded in death by a step daughter, Martha P. Person; two step sons, Louis T. Perdue and Philip S. Perdue; step son-in-law, Robert "Bob" Stamper; a step granddaughter, Melissa B. Stamper and a nephew, David H. Mayo, Jr.

Mrs. Perdue was a graduate of John Graham High School in Warrenton and received a degree in elementary education from East Carolina Teachers College in 1943. She taught in the North Carolina public schools in Wilson, Duplin, Franklin and Wake counties, retiring with 32 years of service. She was recognized for her dedicated service in her profession when she received the National Elementary School Teacher of the Year Award and with her induction, along with her brother and sister's inductions into the East Carolina University Educators Hall of Fame in 2006.

She was an active member at Trinity United Methodist Church in Louisburg, NC, serving as a Sunday School teacher for more than 28 years and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Women and the NC United Methodist Women where she served several years as the president for both. Additionally she served as trustee and board member at Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Eta State in the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society where she also served as a former president.

Surviving are her sister, Lucille T. Mayo of Greenville; two nieces, Margaret "Mitzie" T. Barnette and husband, Russyll of Raleigh; Linda M. Teel and husband, Joseph of Greenville; two nephews, Richard A. Tharrington and wife, Hope of Raleigh; Garrett E. Tharrington and wife, Dorothy of Wake Forest; seven great nieces and nephews and nine great, great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Perdue is also survived by a step daughter, Rebecca "Beckie" P. Stamper of Henderson, two step daughters-in-law, Grace Perdue of Louisburg and Joan Perdue of Banner Elk, five step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 9:30 until 10:45 AM at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Other times the family will be at the home of Lucille Mayo.

The family would like to recognize the excellent care and loving attention shown to Mrs. Perdue by her caregiver and friend, Gail Richards. Additionally, the family would like to thank Patricia Watford as well as the staff of the Fountains at the Albemarle for their care and many kindnesses shown to Mrs. Perdue.
