LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Parks and Recreation Department's Age 7-10 Volleyball League standings were literally a block party this summer.
That's because the Verizon Wireless Block Party claimed the championship with an undefeated 10-0 mark for coaches Derrick Fuller, Wendy Southall and Marie Salter.
"We've had some of these girls for a few years, so that time together has really helped us,'' Fuller said. "We never really talked about winning. We emphasized to make the next play and it's OK if you make a mistake. We also emphasized good sportsmanship.''
Perhaps the most amazing aspect of the season for the Block Party was that the club only earned victories in two-game sweeps on lust three occasions.
Seven times, the Block Party went to a decisive third game -- but was able to come up with a conquest each time.
"We just didn't give up,'' Fuller said. "We told the girls to get going and that they could get the job done. We just did things one game at a time and kept going.''
In addition to the veteran performers in the lineup, the Block Party also boasted three first-time performers -- Mallory Allen, Josie Osborne and Jackie Groves.
The Block Party took part in competitive league as FCPR youth volleyball continues to grow.
But the squad passed each test to nab the regular season crown. A postseason tournament was not stage.
The Block Party's 2015 summer spike roster was as follows:
• Katie Moore
• Jackie Groves
• Ashley Salter
• Natalie Schlafer
• Amber Bell
• Mallory Allen
• Lilly Fuller
• Josie Osborne
• Macey Southall
• Coach Marie Salter
• Coach Derrick Fuller
• Coach Wendy Southall
