WILLIAM WALLACE MULLEN

OXFORD - William Wallace Mullen, 92, of Oxford, NC, went to be with his Lord and Savior December 2, 2015. Born in Bunn, Franklin Co, NC, he was the son of Benjamin McClane Mullen and Pattie Christopher White Mullen of Bunn and later Youngsville, NC.

A 1940 graduate of Youngsville High School, he also held degrees from Wake Forest College and UNC-CH. Prior to becoming Director of the Granville Co. Dept. of Social Services (1956-89), he worked for Hollowell's Grocery in Wake Forest, and the Franklin Co. and Wake Co. DSS. He served in the 357th Searchlight Battalion (US Army) in WWII.

Wallace was an active member of the Baptist Church, first in Bunn and Youngsville, and then in the Oxford Baptist Church. Over his adult life he held numerous leadership positions in these churches including Sunday School teacher, deacon, president of the Baptist Men's Assoc., and director of the Young Adults Dept.

Wallace volunteered with many organizations throughout his life. He served in many capacities in the Lions Club, and was honored for 50 years of service by the Oxford Lions in 2001. Wallace was also active in the NC Association of Directors of Social Services and the NC Social Services Association. He was awarded the Employee of the Year of the NCSSA North Central District in 1983.

Surviving are daughters Sharon Watts (Keith) and Merle Cochrane (Steve); grandchildren, William Watts, Melissa Cochrane Bocci (Phil), Brandon Cochrane (Nikki), Laura Cochrane; and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased in death by his wife of 56 years, Frances Winston Mullen, and 8 brothers and sisters.

Wallace's life exemplified Christian principles and honesty. The integrity, cheerful disposition and unwavering optimism he displayed during his life will forever be an inspiration to his family and friends!

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec 15th, 2015 at Oxford Baptist Church at 2 PM, followed by burial in Oak Level Christian Church Cemetery (Youngsville, NC). Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service at 12:30 until 2 PM. Memorials in lieu of flowers to the OBC WMU and the NC Baptist Men Disaster Relief (PO Box 1107, Cary NC 27512).
