GEORGE THOMAS "TONY" HICKS

FRANKLINTON - George Thomas "Tony" Hicks, 83, passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2016, after a brief battle with cancer.

Born in Vance County, Tony was the only child of George Willoughby and Verlie Macon Mosely Hicks. When Tony was 14, he lost his father and took on the responsibility of the family farm while attending Gold Sand High School, graduating in 1950. After graduation, Tony drove a lumber truck, joined the National Guard where he served for 13 years, and worked for Colonial Stores, gaining experience in the grocery business. He them joined the NC Department of Transportation as an inspector and worked on the construction of Interstate 85. After 7 years with DOT, he decided to return to the grocery business, and worked for A&P Food Stores for 20 years, retiring as manager. Shortly after retiring, he joined Moss Foods where he stayed for 31 years until he became ill in late 2015.

Tony made many friends over the years that were very dear to him. He enjoyed working outdoors, especially on the family farm, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Tony will be remembered for his kindness and generosity to others, great sense of humor, and strong work ethic, but mostly for the unwavering love he gave his family. Even in illness, his concern was always for his family. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who will be missed every day.

Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life for over 61 years, Ellen Anne Medlin Hicks; son, Steward Hicks and wife Teresa; daughter, Tonya Herzog and husband Mark; grandchildren, Justin Wright and wife PoShan, Molly DeWitt and husband Eddie, and Zoey Hicks; great-grandchild, Emmett DeWitt; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends at Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services in Louisburg on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. Funeral services will be held at Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Louisburg at 2 PM on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, with burial following at Liberty Christian Church Cemetery in Henderson.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Mountain Grove Baptist Church, 834 Alert Road, Louisburg, NC 27549.

Arrangements are being handled by Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services. Online condolences may be made to www.lancasterfcs.com.
