SERGEANT MAJOR RETIRED US ARMY JAMES FRANKLIN SMITH

SAVANNAH--Sergeant Major US Army Retired James Franklin Smith, 87, of Savannah, died on September 13, 2017. He was born in Hagerstown, Maryland to the late Glomer and Lola Smith. He was preceded by death of two children: Donald Smith and Donna Temme.

He was an Army veteran, having served in the Occupation of Japan, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He served for 32 years in the U.S. Army and 11 years of Civil Service.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Barbara Ann Smith, who is formerly from Louisburg, NC and is the daughter of the late Percy and Christine Joyner. He has 5 children: David Smith, Dawn Smith, Dana Martin, Mark Walker, and Christina Temme. He has 4 grandchildren: Katie Spell, Courtney Smith, Marshall Smith, and Stephanie Martin. He has 3 great-grandchildren: Mason Parr, Preslee Spell, and Raelynn Spell. He has 3 sisters: Barbara Schram of High Point, NC, Ethel Sell of Augusta, GA, and Arlene Mancini of Raleigh, NC.

Visitation was Friday, September 15, 2017 from 6-8 p.m at Meadows Funeral Home in Monroe, GA. Funeral Services was Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Monroe, GA with Rev. Robert E. Davis officiating. A reception and meal were provided after the service in Fellowship Hall.
