BUNN--Ruby Edwards Elmore departed this life after a brief illness, on Wednesday, January 10, 2018. On Saturday January 20, 2018, visitation with the family will begin at 11:00 AM at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, followed by the service at 12:00 PM. The church is located 893 Bunn Elementary School Road, Bunn, NC 27508.

Ruby was born on May 8, 1932 in Bull's Head, NC and resided in Snow Hill, NC until graduating from Greene County Training School in 1949. She attended St. Phillips School of Nursing in Richmond, VA; earned a BS in Nursing from the University Maryland (1972) and a Masters in Nursing from Catholic University (1983). Ruby led an exemplary career as a psychiatric and administrative nurse working for thirty-four (34) years at St. Elizabeth Mental Health Hospital in Washington, DC. While residing in Washington, Ruby belonged to John Wesley AME Zion Church.

After retirement Ruby established her residence in Bunn, NC, where she was an active member of a multitude of civic organizations, cultural clubs and political action groups. She faithfully served in leadership roles at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church including the Nursing Ministry, the Substance Abuse Recovery Ministry and the Board of Trustees. Ruby was the founder of Bunn Residents Organized Against Drugs, Inc. (B.R.O.A.D) which is a non-profit entity devoted to providing human services, counseling and educational resources to those impacted by substance abuse.

Ruby leaves to celebrate her legacy: her son, Thomas Elmore (Marilyn) of Clemmons, NC; daughter-in-law Robin Wilkerson of Washington, DC; grandchildren, Toya Jones of Charlotte, NC, Kia Woodson, Kendra Elmore, and Kelvin Elmore, Jr. of Washington, DC; two great-granddaughters, Toya Jones and Tavian Jones of Charlotte, NC; long-time companion, Austin Hughes; and a great host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her former husband, Thomas Elmore, Sr.; her son, Kelvin Elmore, Sr.; and by all of her brothers and sisters.

The interment is immediately following the service at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens at 809 W. Gannon Avenue, Zebulon, NC 27597. The family is being skillfully served by William Toney's Funeral Home in Spring Hope, NC.
