BHS tourney brackets finalized

BUNN -- The annual Bunn High School Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament will be held Dec. 27-29 at the Bunn Dome.

Northern Nash will return in an attempt to defend its championship, while other entrants are Bunn, Wake Forest, Faith Assembly Christian Academy, Word of God, Warren County, perennial powerhouse Kinston and East Wake, which is coached by former BHS skipper Gerald Melton.

Tickets will be available at the gate and will be good for the entire day of action.

Pairings for the event are as follows:

Dec. 27
First Round
• 3 p.m. -- Game 1, Wake Forest vs. Faith Assembly Christian Academy
• 4:30 p.m. -- Game 2, Northern Nash vs. Warren County
• 6 p.m. -- Game 3, Kinston vs. East Wake
• 7:30 p.m. -- Game 4, Word of God vs. Bunn

Dec. 28
Semifinal Round
• 3 p.m. -- Game 5, Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2
• 4:30 p.m. -- Game 6, Loser Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4

VGCC HOOPS: The Vance-Granville Community College men's basketball team kicked off its 2018-19 campaign last Saturday with a 92-86 road victory at Thomas Nelson College in Virginia.

Former Southern Vance star Justus Baldwin led the way for the Vanguards with 22 points.

Franklin County native Tre' Gaither from Franklinton delivered 11 points, while ex-Bunn performer Cam Thomas came through with seven points.

This is the first season as VGCC's head coach for former Southern Vance skipper Gregory Ackles, who resides in Franklin County.

The Vanguards traveled to Fayetteville Tech on Wednesday.

WRESTLING: Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling (MACW) will present a Night of Champions card on November 17 at the Nash Central High School Gymnasium.

The event will feature former WCW Superstar Buff "The Stuff' Bagwell, former WWE Star Shane "The Hurricane" Helms, Johnny Swinger, The Heatseekers and many other MACW Superstars.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. with the bell time at 8 p.m.

Cost is $10 for general admission or $20 for ringside admission.

Tickets are available at Black Cat Harley Davidson in Rocky Mount, Pridgen Tire and Auto in Rocky Mount and at the door.

MUDCATS: The Carolina Mudcats, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, have announced their new 2019 Carolina League season schedule, which begins on April 4 in Kinston versus the Down East Wood Ducks and continues with the club's regular season home opener at Five County Stadium on April 11 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

In all, the Mudcats will play 140 total games in 2019, with 70 home games at Five County Stadium and 70 games on the road.

Carolina's season-opening road trip marks the club's third such start to a season since joining the Carolina League in 2012.

Picturesque Five County Stadium is located in Zebulon and is the home to the Carolina Mudcats
