W-F police officer fired over exploitation charges

RALEIGH -- A Franklin County man and former Wake Forest officer surrendered himself to authorities last week on child sex crimes.

Agents with the State Bureau of Investigation charged Alex Gary Sims, 35, with two counts of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

According to authorities, the investigation began with a cyber tip. Authorities did not provide any additional information regarding the details of the crime or how it was committed.

A second degree charge, though, deals with the receipt or dissemination of child pornography.

Sims, according to reports, worked as a corporal for the Wake Forest Police Department, but was placed on paid administrative leave Jan. 10 after the SBI made Wake Forest police aware of its investigation. He was fired a few days later.

He is next slated to appear in Franklin County District Court on March 2.
