Zebulon man killed trying to cross road

YOUNGSVILLE -- A Zebulon man was killed when authorities said he tried to cross a two-lane highway late at night.

Alonzo June Hartsfield, 86, died as a result of injuries sustained in the March 20 accident.

According to a report by Trooper J.T. Southerland, Hartsfield was crossing the road when he walked into the path of a car driven by Justin Wheeler, 37, of Youngsville.

According to the report, Wheeler was heading west on N.C. 98 toward U.S. 401 when Hartsfield crossed his path. Wheeler did stop at the scene.

According to the report, Wheeler was cited for driving while his license was revoked, but he was not charged with Hartsfield's death.

He is slated to appear in court on Aug. 18 regarding the revoked license charge.

Wheeler is slated to appear in court next month on a number of unrelated traffic citations.
