RALEIGH, NC- Margaret McLeod Bunn Moss passed away peacefully of natural causes at age 94 on January 21, 2021 at her residence at The Rosewood Health Center (The Cypress) in Raleigh, NC. She was born in Washington, DC to Jackson Howard Bunn, Sr. and Grace McLeod Bunn but primarily grew up in her father's idyllic hometown of Zebulon, with frequent visits to her mother's hometown of Elizabethtown.
Margaret was graduated from Meredith College and, like her parents, had a distinguished career in education, including 12 years at Wake Forest Elementary School and 16 years at Ravenscroft School. She was best known for her special ability to teach first-graders the joys of reading, which many of her former students recall to this day. Her teaching colleagues have said that she was a role model and a mentor, and for many of her students, she was an inspiration to become a teacher.
Margaret will be remembered mostly for her Southern graciousness and for her love of family and friends. She treasured many dear friendships in Zebulon, at Meredith College, in Youngsville, Wake Forest, Raleigh, Atlantic Beach, and throughout the state. She enjoyed the fellowship that comes with playing bridge and also her many trips throughout the country and the world with family and friends.
She particularly loved her one-on-one special trips with her grandchildren when they were 10 years old, which included memorable adventures to Washington, DC, the Colorado Rockies, Alaska, London, Paris, and New York City. She was the founding president of the Woman's Club of Youngsville in 1955, and as an avid reader, she was the founding president of the Epicurean Book Club in Raleigh. She was an active member and volunteer at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, and previously of First Presbyterian Church and Youngsville Baptist Church, and she also was a volunteer at the NC Museum of Art, the NC Symphony, and Rex Hospital. She enjoyed a variety of crafts, including scrapbooking, painting, knitting, crochet, and needlepoint (she surprised herself when her only entry at the NC State Fair--a needlepoint pillow--won a blue ribbon). And no one ever loved a Snoopy's hot dog all the way and Goodberry's vanilla in a cup more than she.
Margaret is survived by three sons, Jim (Susan), Bill (Mary), and David; seven grandchildren, Kristy Rogers (Spencer), Jody Ransom (Bryan), Elizabeth Allen (Davis), William Moss (Chailee), John Moss (Beth), Alex Moss, and Caroline Moss; ten great-grandchilden, Carson and Libby Rogers; Titus, Salathiel, Sydney, and Greta Ransom; Louisa, Flora, and Henry Moss; and Emma Moss; and sister-in-law Janelle Smith Bunn and her family. She was predeceased by her parents, by her brother, Jackson Howard Bunn, Jr., and by her husband of almost 40 years, James Thomas Moss, Sr.
A private interment will take place at Zebulon Town Cemetery, and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
