HERBERT G. LEONARD SR.

LOUISBURG, NC--Herbert Gene Leonard Sr., 79 of the Centerville Community passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021.

He was born on February 22, 1942 to the late Willard and Doris Gupton Leonard. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Leonard and his sister, Rose Leonard.

He served in the National Guard for six years. Herbert retired from IBM in 2002 as a tool die machinist after 36 years with numerous patents. He enjoyed working on his own machinery at home and his expertise was often sought out by the community. He also enjoyed growing a vegetable garden that he shared generously with the community. He had a love for antique cars and Elvis music.

After his retirement he looked forward to the monthly luncheons with his fellow retired IBM co-workers. In later years after his health declined and he was no longer able to drive you would often see him flying through the crossroads on his golf cart. The highlight of his day was his daily visits from his family and his precious grandchildren that he greatly loved and would often try to coerce into giving him his truck keys so that he could drive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Centerville Baptist Church, with Reverend Doug Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his son, Herbert Leonard Jr. (Amy), his daughter, Sharon Leonard (Terrell Gupton), his grandchildren, Gabriel Gupton, Taylor and Mason Leonard, mother of his children, Sandy Leonard Davis, his brother, Tommy Leonard, his aunt Pat Leonard Kennedy (Leland).

Arrangements are being handled by Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services, 804 N. Bickett Blvd., Louisburg, NC 27549. Online condolences may be made to www.lancasterfcs.com.
