Janice Joyner Fleming

Lynchburg, VA--Janice Joyner Fleming, 83, passed away on November 15, 2023 at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, Virginia.

She was born in Louisburg, North Carolina, and was the daughter of the late William Bennett Joyner and the late Estelle J. Joyner. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, William H. Fleming, and daughter Angela M. Fleming. She was also predeceased by brother Malcolm E. Joyner, nephews William Clifford Joyner, Jr., G. M. "Buddy" West, Jr., and Robert B. Fleming, Jr..

Janice is survived by daughter Lynn F. Will and her husband Michael D. Will of Lynchburg; granddaughters Kelly Will Knight, her husband Martin and their children William and Margaret, also of Lynchburg, and Sarah Ann Will Parrish, her husband Robert and their children Caroline and Emma of McLean, VA. She is also survived by her sister, Kathryn Joyner West and brother, William Clifford Joyner, and sisters-in-law Edna Joyner and Diane Fleming, all of North Carolina.

Janice attended Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, in Wilson, North Carolina, and received degrees from Virginia Western Community College, Radford College and Radford University, all in Virginia. She studied at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, as well. Her studies were focused on teacher education, psychology, and music.

Janice and her husband Bill raised their daughters in Roanoke, Virginia, where she taught elementary school for many years. They later moved to Whitakers, North Carolina, where Janice taught in the Education Department of N.C. Wesleyan College. In addition to teaching classes, she was Supervisor of Student Teachers, Coordinator of Elementary Education, and Director of Field Placement for student teachers. She was honored to receive Who's Who Among Human Service Professionals, Who's Who in American Education, and was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma International, an honor society for women educators. She also received the Exemplary Teacher Award and was given the title of Asst. Professor Emeritus of Education.

After retirement, Janice and Bill moved to Lynchburg, Virginia to be close to family members. Spending time with her granddaughters and great grandchildren was her greatest joy. She also loved the close connections she maintained with her extended family of siblings and nieces and nephews, dear friends, and former students throughout the years. Her passion for learning and teaching lasted her entire life, and she was always invested in the success of all her students.

Throughout her life, Janice was very active in the life of the churches she attended, and was a dedicated choir member and Sunday School teacher. She loved gardening, cooking, reading, traveling, and celebrating life with friends and family.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation.

A celebration of Janice's life will be held at Louisburg Baptist Church on Monday, November 27th at 12:00 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
