GREENVILLE -- East Carolina University Director of Athletics Terry Holland announced Tuesday that Pirate head baseball coach Billy Godwin will serve a two-week suspension without pay as a department-imposed corrective action for a self-reported National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) violation that involved impermissible housing benefits for volunteer coaches.
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Bunn High School’s boys basketball squad is ranked seventh in the most recent NCPreps.com/High School Media Class 2-A State Poll.
The Wildcats, coached by Gerald Melton, garnered 39 points in the voting, leaving them just one point behind No. 6 Reidsville.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Franklin County’s own ‘Redman’ -- also known as Lamont Richardson -- is back in the ring, and wrestling opponents continue to pay a heavy price during Richardson’s return.
Redman, who graduated from Louisburg High School in 1998, was working his way up the ladder of the Gouge Wrestling promotion before moving to Texas.

A Franklinton man accused of helping a murderer avoid jail was sentenced to prison for his role in the incident.
Stephen Hawkins’ plea deal concludes four cases surrounding the Sept. 20, 2010 murder of Jesse Montague Jr.
Hawkins, 26, pled guilty to accessory after the fact of second-degree murder after police allege he helped Rashawn Arrington flee to Virginia.

A Lake Royale man accused of shooting his girlfriend in the head may be laying the groundwork for a sleepwalking defense.
Lake Royale police arrested Gary E. Robinson Jr. on Nov. 3, alleging that he shot Jessica Ashworth with a small-caliber gun.

Board of Elections officials and staff met with county management this week to figure out where Cypress Creek residents will cast their ballots this spring and fall.
The action became necessary after elections officials and staff were notified that a Seven Paths community group would no longer be maintaining the Community Center — the Sykes Road building that has been the Cypress Creek polling place for years.

The case against a Youngsville man accused of trying to set his girlfriend on fire will most likely be resolved during the next court session.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested Gary Normand on March 5, shortly after they allege he assaulted and tried to kill his girlfriend, Chloe Reynolds.

The case against a woman accused of running a puppy mill hit a snag this week.
Rena Long was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals after local and regional animal control advocates descended on her Carlyle Road property in June after receiving a complaint of animal cruelty.
With the aid of agents from the Humane Society of the United States, animal control staff seized hundreds of dogs, ducks, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and other animals for their welfare.

On the world’s stage, it’s often said that we Americans are spoiled, self centered, greedy and selfish.
But come to small town America and you’ll quickly realize that stereotype is as wrong as wrong can be.
Never has that been more obvious than last Thursday night when the Chamber of Commerce named its citizen of the year and honored three other individuals for their special service to their community.
GOOD MORNING: I don’t know if it was the weather or what, but something sparked a notable increase in online responses by Times readers over the weekend.
For example: Here’s one by thecollective on 1/21/12 In reference to plans for a geriatric psychiatry unit at Franklin Regional Medical Center here in Louisburg, and I quote; “Thank God, now we will have a place to send our county commissioners for evaluation and treatment.”
Talk about your opposite ends of the spectrum.
This past Thursday, I was at a function that celebrated the best things that Franklin County has to offer as the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet, recognizing community volunteers and leaders who have done much to make this place better.
Will the access road being built from US 401 to the Triangle North Franklin hub site, make a significant impact on the growth of the industrial park?

I’m very glad that Franklin Regional Medical Center is planning to open a geriatric psychiatry unit. This is a service that is badly needed because, without it, many county residents must drive long distances to see loved ones.

Area narcotics agents arrested two men during a drug sting.
According to a report by Dep. Justin Hastings, a woman notified authorities the evening of Jan. 17 that someone sent a text message to her son trying to sale drugs.
In response, investigators told the woman to send back a message to set up the sale.
Getting the message of the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce out to members and prospective members falls to its ambassador corps of volunteers.
