Due to a family emergency, the Rabies Clinic scheduled for Saturday, May 1, at Annie Lee’s Grocery, Old Wal-Mart in Louisburg, and Youngsville Elementary School, has been cancelled. The clinic has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 22, at the same time and location.

Army National Guard Pfc. Justus Berger graduates
Army National Guard Pfc. Justus S. Berger has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Knox, Ky., which included basic combat training and advanced individual training (AIT).
During the first nine weeks of initial entry training (IET), the trainee completed basic combat training which included instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, marches, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions, and core values.

FHS’ CROWN QUEST
FRANKLINTON -- Despite a string of successes in a relatively short period of time, one milestone has escaped Deran Coe in his tenure as the only soccer coach Franklinton High School has ever known.
A Northern Carolina Conference girls championship.
It took awhile, but Coe’s boys clubs were able to earn a pair of NCC crowns in 2007 and 2008.

LOUISBURG -- In reality, only one week matters in the Region X baseball scheme of things.
And it starts next Wednesday for the Lousburg College Hurricanes.
Louisburg, seeded third, will tangle with Florence-Darlington Technical College on that day at 10 a.m. in the first round of the annual Region X Tournament, which will be held this time around at historic Burlington Athletic Park in nearby Alamance County.

BUNN -- In his first-ever varsity start, Bunn’s Taylor Longson was strong through five innings last Thursday, helping the  Wildcats come up with a key 5-2 victory against Warren County in a Northern Carolina Conference baseball matchup.
With the win, Bunn improved to 5-4 in the league, which is good for fourth place outright. Four teams from the NCC will qualify for the Class 2-A State Baseball Playoffs.

New information in the case surrounding a Louisburg woman’s attempt to kidnap a baby continues to evolve, including the revelation that an assault earlier this month might have been related to her baby-napping scheme.
Louisburg police arrested Tanisha Weaver on April 5 on charges that she attempted to assault Keica Gaines with a knife in the Walmart parking lot.

Hernandez murder case headed to court
A 23-year-old accused of killing his former girlfriend nearly three years ago is slated to be in court next week.
It’s not clear whether the matter will go to trial or be continued.
Investigators arrested Christopher Steven Thomas in June of 2007, charging him with the May 10 death of Elvira Hernandez —  a 17-year-old Bunn High student.

Lucy Allen honored
The Franklin County Democratic Party celebrated the legacy of Lucy Allen’s public service Thursday night, which included a presentation of the state’s highest individual honor — The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Allen has had more than 30 years of public service, most recently as a legislator in the North Carolina House.
Gov. Bev Perdue appointed her earlier this month to serve on the state Utilities Commission.

FRMC hires new emergency room director
Haresh M. Kathard, M.D. joined the Franklin Regional Medical Center medical staff as its medical director of the emergency department this week.
Dr. Kathard has been practicing medicine since 1990 and he became board-certified in family medicine in 2004. In addition to completing post graduate studies in emergency care and anesthesia in South Africa, Dr. Kathard has been practicing in the United States as family practitioner and emergency care physician since 1999.

FRANKLINTON — Town commissioners gave staff a month to determine the kinds of impacts an Internet Sweepstakes Cafe would have on the town before deciding its fate.
Raleigh resident Dorothy Mayner petitioned the board on Tuesday night to locate one of the trendy new businesses in the Franklinton Square shopping center.
