FRANKLINTON - Like most aficionados of the sport, Joel Moulin spent many of his teenage days on the golf course in his native Missouri.

RALEIGH -- Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, has announced that the team has acquired center Matt Cullen from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, forward Joe Barnes and a third round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- After outscoring opponents by a whopping 36-2 margin in three games, the Franklin County Nationals took home the Dixie Baseball District Championship last weekend.
The Nationals, coached by Ken Smith, opened tourney action with a 16-0, four-inning victory over Youngsville 1 on July 12 at the Franklinton Recreation Park.

Former House Speaker Jim Black was sentenced to federal prison this week, and Franklin County’s legislative leaders said it’s the appropriate fate for a leader who abused his office and the public’s trust. “From the outset, I took the position of let the criminal justice system work and I think it has in this situation,” said Sen. Doug Berger, who represents Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties.

Deputies may be close to an arrest relating to graffiti spray painted on the road at Loblolly Circle in Louisburg. Franklin County deputy J. Perry responded to a call on July 6 that several obscene and gang-related phrases had been spray painted in the neighborhood.

The county put together the Small Area Plan (SAP) Advisory Committee to determine the best way to plan for growth around the airport and a 250-acre industrial site.

A Franklinton company has two weeks to pay a fine or contest a citation that asserts it violated work safety laws that led to the death of an employee. Franciso Baez Morales, 20, was killed at Franklin Veneers on April 10 while he was removing plastic covering from a log pile when they released and rolled on top of him.

Grace Fellowship Church of God is the newest congregation to hold its worship services in the Youngsville Christian Church building. The building, which has been the crux of controversy between the Youngsville Woman’s Club and Hope Baptist Church due to an ownership ruffle, is expected to be converted into a town museum in 2008.
