Franklin County sheriff’s deputies served a warrant this week, charging Christopher Thomas, from his hospital bed, with murder.
Investigators allege Thomas killed Bunn High student Elvira Hernandez on May 10 as she and a cousin got off the school bus in front of Hernandez’ home on Ferrells Bridge Road.

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners agreed in principle with a school board recommendation to accept the second lowest bidder for a new elementary school.
The Board of Education accepted an $11.2-million bid by D.A. Thomas Construction Co. to build a new west Franklinton elementary school.
LOUISBURG - Robert M. Hester, 36, died suddenly Saturday morning, June 2, 2007. A celebration of his life was conducted at a memorial service Tuesday, June 5, at the Louisburg High School Auditorium.
LOUISBURG - George William Whitman, 37, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at his home. Services were conducted Tuesday, June 5, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest.
RALEIGH - Viola Kate Malagisi, 64, died Saturday, June 2, 2007. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh.
RALEIGH - Donald Sanderson died Thursday, May 31, 2007 after several years of declining health. A celebration of his life was held at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Raleigh on June 2.
ZEBULON - Willer Mae Alford Privette, 86, died Friday, June 1, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 4, at Stoney Hill Freewill Baptist Church. Burial was in Pine Ridge Baptist Church cemetery.
BUNN - Mrs. Tammy Dunston Miller, 44, died Sunday, June 3, 2007. Arrangements by William Toney’s Funeral Home in Zebulon.
LOUISBURG - Mary L. Davis, 66, died Sunday, June 3, 2007 at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Louisburg. Burial will follow in the Cemetery on the Hill in Louisburg.
GRAHAM - Warnell “Nell” Strickland Pulliam, 80, of Graham, died Monday, June 4, 2007, at Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Nell dedicated her life to loving and cherishing both family and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Denton; sister, Betsy Strickland Sauls; and a brother, Elvis Strickland.

Members of the Bunn High School softball coaching staff aren’t trying to sound greedy. After all, the Ladycats put together a strong postseason run to reach the Class 2-A State Final Four at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

RALEIGH -- Could this simply be the beginning for the Bunn High School fast-pitch softball program?
BHS hadn’t been to the Class 2-A State Softball Final Four since 1996, when current coach Melanie Lovin was a starting catcher.
It was hoped that Bunn would break Franklin County’s 18-year state team championship drought -- in any sport -- at last weekend’s Class 2-A State Fast-Pitch Softball Playoffs.
RALEIGH – Sophomore Chelsea Leonard of Central Davidson fired a no-hitter in the finals of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A softball championships at Walnut Creek Softball Complex last Saturday as Central blanked South Brunswick 4-0.
Leonard struck out 18 and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player as Central Davidson completed a 32-1 campaign. Leonard did not allow a hit during three games of the tourney.
CHAPEL HILL -- Stephen Batts, Jamie Ray and Corey Kemp were named to the 2007 Chapel Hill Regional All-Tournament Team following North Carolina’s 6-5 regional championship win over Western Carolina tournament officials announced Monday afternoon.

The Franklin County airport board figures it’s time to take a position on an aviation bill that at least one commissioner said could devastate general aviation airports. U.S. senators Jay Rockefeller, Trent Lott, Daniel K. Inouye and Ted Stevens introduced the Aviation Investment and Modernization Act of 2007 that would, among other things, charge a $25 fee per flight on commercial and high-end general aviation jet flights.

The black bear suspected of pulling a disappearing act near Terrell Lane Middle School on May 25 was hit by a car Thursday morning. The bear, reported to be about a year to a year and a half old and about 110 pounds, was euthanized after the collision.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office identified a body this week that boaters and investigators found in Falls Lake last November. In a news release on Friday, investigators confirmed that boaters discovered Thomas Ray, 53, of 69 Arnold Way, Louisburg, in Falls Lake on Nov. 25.
