Louisburg man charged in rape of 4-year-old girl
A Louisburg man is slated to appear in court later this month on sexual assault charges involving a 4-year-old girl. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Maron Ranalld Levister, 29, of 1001 S. Main St., on May 24. The arrest was the result of a probe launched by a Franklin County Department of Social Services child protective services investigator.

Dozens of students and residents turned out Wednesday for Spirit Day at a local restaurant where half of that night’s profits — and maybe more — will be donated to a Bunn-area family mourning a loss. Bunn High student Elvira Hernandez, 17, was gunned down on May 10 after getting off a school bus.

Franklin County could get more of the green scene
The new Louisburg bike trail may be linking up with a newly proposed 65-mile trail running through Henderson, Franklinton and Youngsville. On the eve of National Trails Day, state officials announced plans last week to add a 65-mile hiking and biking trail to the state’s trails system, with the proposed trail passing right through Franklin County.

Arrest made in Louisburg Kangaroo robbery
A Louisburg man has been charged in an armed robbery after holding up The Pantry Kangaroo station off Bickett Boulevard early Wednesday morning. David Lee Freeman of Hazlewood Apartments off Sandlewood Drive was arrested on East Nash Street at 1:33 a.m. by Louisburg Police Officer Anthony Holtz just five minutes after a clerk called to report the robbery, Louisburg Police Chief Rick Lassiter said.

LC event scheduled for Sept.
Organizers are calling it ‘The Big Event,’ and that’s exactly how the folks at Louisburg College are treating what has been promised to be the most attended athletic reunion in school history. A weekend of festivities is planned for Sept. 28-30 on the LC campus. Each former living LC athlete has received a flyer in the mail, urging them to participate in the event.

Down by the River
Hundreds of residents and visitors turned out for the 17th annual Tar River Festival on Saturday. Clear skies prevailed.
Event host, the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, reported the crowds were not as large as expected but were steady all day.
“We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day,” Chamber Executive Director Stephen Barrington said. “We had beautiful skies throughout the event.”

MANU strikes: 150 drug charges made
Louisburg police and area narcotics agents have arrested nearly two dozen people as part of an ongoing operation to weed out drugs.
Since Feb. 27, the Louisburg Police Department and agents within the Franklin County Multi Agency Narcotics Unit have conducted an undercover drug operation that has resulted in 150 criminal drug charges against 43 people.

With high school graduation just around the corner, not all students will walk across the stage.
Those who drop out of school do so for a variety of reasons, but “very seldom, practically never, do they do it because they do not have the academic ability to complete high school,” said Cherry Ayscue, the 11th- and 12th-grade guidance counselor at Louisburg High School.

Archaeological field school opens up to public
To most, digging through 200-year-old trash isn’t a summer adventure.
But head out to Rose Hill Plantation this Saturday for a vistors’ day and see how much fun it can be.
It’s all part of what a group of anthropology and archaeology students and researchers are doing to reconstruct what 19th-century life was like on the plantation, which is just south of Louisburg on U.S. Highway 401.

Roberts faces more charges in car wreck
The state Highway Patrol added another charge against a teenager responsible for a recent head-on collision.
The law enforcement agency had already charged Krystal Beth Roberts, 17, with careless and reckless driving and driving left of center following a May 25 wreck near Mort Harris Road where Roberts’ car crashed head-on into a Louisburg Police car driven by Officer Brenda Hawkins.
