ZEBULON - Iredell Gay Bunn, 87, died Friday, July 7, 2006. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 9, at Hopkins Chapel Baptist Church, Zebulon, with the Rev. Earl Roach and the Rev. Jack Glasgow officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
RALEIGH - John Donald Coffin, 67, died Saturday, July 8, 2006. A private graveside service will be conducted at Oakwood Cemetery at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, July 12), with the Rev. Ed New of Edenton Street United Methodist Church officiating.

LOUISBURG - Louisburg can thank its Plucky stars that Gregory Clifton was a member of its roster for the Dixie Youth Minor League District X Tournament.
Clifton, affectionately known as ‘Plucky’ by his friends and family, hadn’t come up with a hit until his final at-bat at the tourney - even though he is regarded as one of Louisburg’s chief offensive threats.
Just because they’ve graduated from Dixie Youth Baseball doesn’t mean the heroics have stopped for six former Louisburg All-Stars.

One of Franklin County’s own is set to make his mark on state-level politics. Ronnie Goswick, director of the Economic Development Commission, was named president of the North Carolina Economic Developers Association and appointed to the N.C. Economic Development Board on Wednesday.

The Board of Education will look at a new contract for a proposed elementary school site Monday, revised by developer and former Commissioner Jim Moss. The new contract removes restrictions and lowers the asking price.

YOUNGSVILLE — Residents living along a private road outside of Youngsville will have to ban together if they want their road upgraded.
When Thomas Loftis Jr. moved to his Harris Road home in 1982, he and group of other residents and the developer were drafting a road maintenance program that would have been cemented through a homeowners’ association, but time passed and so did the developer and Realtor.

Since May 1, the Franklin Regional Cancer Treatment Center has been providing state-of-the-art care for patients in and around the county.
The center, located on Jolly Street in Louisburg, brings together chemotherapy and radiation treatment in one location.
“It’s a valuable new resource for local citizens,” said Paige McLaurin, the company’s property and office manager. “Not only does it make it more convenient for the patients, but it also improves the quality of care by enhancing coordinating the efforts.”

The state approved an $18.9 billion budget that turned out to be a jackpot for education. The budget includes an average 8 percent increase in teacher base salary, doesn’t cut the system’s discretionary funding, and provides funding for low wealth systems.
A domestic dispute between the Franklin County Commission chairman and his wife did not result in charges but did generate an incident report. Franklin County Deputy B.J. Oakley responded to a domestic call at 129 George Leonard Road at about 7 p.m. on June 30.

NEW CHIEF IN TOWN. Long-time Board of Elections Deputy Director Amy Southerland was tabbed as the new elections’ director this week, taking over in September following the retirement of Director Billy Craft. Southerland has more than 12 years of election office experience and has served as deputy director for the past six years. “I am excited about the opportunity ... and plan to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Riverside Elementary Magnet School is losing its students, but it should be keeping its name. The name of the campus will be discussed in a Board of Education meeting on Monday, but there should not be a change, Superintendent Bert L’Homme said.
