Commissioners begin process to name new sheriff
Eight months after former sheriff Pat Green resigned his post amid allegations that he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners agreed to move forward with plans to name a permanent sheriff.
The board admitted, though, that it will be doing so without knowing what a State Bureau of Investigation probe has uncovered, or who, if anyone else, might be implicated.

County delays decision on emergency radio towers
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners agreed to wait another month to discuss radio towers.
Currently, if an applicant wants to erect an emergency communications tower, they have to receive a conditional-use permit — which requires a number of obligations, including a public hearing and other activities that would alert the public of the action.

Police chief makes another plea for department funding
YOUNGSVILLE — Police Chief Daren Kirts made his second public plea in three months, asking commissioners to find money to fund his department.
Its a request, he said, that can’t continue to be denied.
“I need help,” he told the board during its regular meeting on Thursday night.
“I can’t maintain public safety at this point.”

Alzheimer’s care facility coming to Franklin County
A new business is well on its way to opening a new facility in Franklin County near Century Link south of Youngsville.
The company, Smith/Packett Med-Com, LLC, is planning an Alzheimer’s care facility with the total cost of construction pegged at about $2.5 million.

Lack of funding, not desire, holds up arts council renovation project
After months of trying to figure out ways to renovate the old county jail, Arts Council members determined that the flesh is willing, but the finances — not so much.
Commissioners, community leaders and civic groups have bandied about a new use for the old jail for years.
Last summer, the Franklin County Arts Council decided it would take another look at the jail and its potential uses, exploring a private/public partnership to rehabilitate the building.

GOOD MORNING: Tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 11 will be the 10th anniversary of the disastrous attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in our nation’s capital.
Like I recalled just a couple of weeks ago concerning the Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941 sneak attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, I remember how, where and when I learned of the attack, only the news of that came via radio as opposed to TV.

Jay Lamm’s cartoon in the Sept. 4 edition of the Times is too good to pass up writing about, and then the picture of the uprooted tree at  Oakwood Cemetery in Asher Johnson’s column ... that was definitely Irene.
The mayor leaves big stumps when he goes in with a chainsaw and clean cuts.

Youngsville, area police combine to arrest fleeing suspect in stolen car
Youngsville police arrested a Henderson man who led officers on a chase through Wake Forest.
According to a report by Youngsville Police Lt. M.L. Little, he was patrolling on U.S. 1 when a car going southbound went by at 80 mph. According to the report, the driver, later identified as Jeremy Bagby, 29, did not have the car’s headlights on.

UW Siren Cook-off scheduled for Oct. 8
Plans are shaping up for the first fire/rescue/police Siren Cook-Off Contest.
The United Way of Franklin County event will be Oct. 8 at the Louisburg Moose Lodge, and local teams from fire, rescue and police departments will be competing for community support (based on ticket sales), best BBQ pork, best chicken and best sauce – all to be judged. The ladies’ auxiliaries will be entering a best cake competition.

Designated elementary schools to participate in USDA fresh fruit, vegetable program
North Carolina has been awarded with the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program by the USDA.
This grant program will enable students at Laurel Mill, Louisburg and Franklinton Elementary schools to have their fruits and vegetables and eat them too!
