Franklin Regional Medical Center will host a free diabetes community event. The event, Healthy Night Out: A Two Part Series on Diabetes, is comprised of two parts.
Friday, Oct. 7 will be an informational session on diabetes geared toward those who suffer from or care for people who suffer from the disease.

Farmers may be eligible for loans
Franklin County farmers may be eligible for Farm Service Agency EM loans after President Barack Obama included this county in the list of counties eligible for assistance after Hurricane Irene.
In addition to five counties declared disaster areas, including Vance County, 15 additional North Carolina counties were named a contiguous counties where loan assistance may be available.

Ruedrich honored for historic preservation work in Wake Count
Noted preservationist, Dean Ruedrich of Louisburg, is among eight Wake County projects that will receive awards at Capital Area Preservation’s 18th Annual Anthemion Awards Presentation on Monday, Sept. 19.
Ruedrich will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Preservation Award. Anthemion Awards recognize outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in historic preservation in Wake County.

RED OAK -- Freshman Jacques Alston scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and racked up 151 return yards, but it would not be enough on Saturday as Hampden-Sydney cruised to a 56-17 victory at the Northern Nash Football Complex, spoiling the Bishops’ 2011 home opener.
The loss drops Wesleyan to 0-2 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 2-0.

There was cake, smiling and a whole lot of gratitude when families came to “shop” for school supplies as part of “Build A BackPack.”
Despite Hurricane Irene, 185 Franklin county students with their families were given backpacks and school supplies Aug. 27 to begin the new year.

North Carolina USDA Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Aaron Martin has announced that Lindsay Driver is the new executive director for the Franklin County Farm Service Agency.
Martin said Driver was chosen, in large part, because of her experience in planning, managing, harvesting and inspecting crops and livestock.

Staying strong for the children
The morning of Sept. 11, 2001, began just about like every other morning had for four years — a ride on the “J-train” from Brooklyn, greeting the 3- and 4-year-olds who would be in her care for the day and chatting with parents dropping off their children on their way to work, and making sure breakfast was served.
It wasn’t much different than mornings today when she arrives for work at a Louisburg day care.

Commissioners begin process to name new sheriff
Eight months after former sheriff Pat Green resigned his post amid allegations that he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners agreed to move forward with plans to name a permanent sheriff.
The board admitted, though, that it will be doing so without knowing what a State Bureau of Investigation probe has uncovered, or who, if anyone else, might be implicated.

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners agreed to wait another month to discuss radio towers.
Currently, if an applicant wants to erect an emergency communications tower, they have to receive a conditional-use permit — which requires a number of obligations, including a public hearing and other activities that would alert the public of the action.

Police chief makes another plea for department funding
YOUNGSVILLE — Police Chief Daren Kirts made his second public plea in three months, asking commissioners to find money to fund his department.
Its a request, he said, that can’t continue to be denied.
“I need help,” he told the board during its regular meeting on Thursday night.
“I can’t maintain public safety at this point.”
