Air conditioning units stolen from vacant Murphy House
Louisburg police are looking for suspects who stole $10,000 worth of equipment from a vacated business.
According to a report by Officer T.W. Lincoln, suspects stole two air-conditioning units from the Murphy House location on Bickett Boulevard.
The business has been closed since last spring, but items remained at the site.

BUNN -- Bunn High School’s Alumni Volleyball Day always brings a huge crowd -- but this year proved to be the all-time topper for the Ladycats.
A whopping total of 24 former players showed up for the annual event -- encompassing just about every era of Coach Henry Jones’ storied tenure at the school, which spans back to the mid-1990s.

PEARL, MISS. -- Jordan Kreke singled home Cory Harrilchak with the winning run in the last of the ninth to lift Mississippi to a 4-3 victory over Carolina on Sunday night before 1,407 fans at Trustmark Park in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.
The game-winning rally started against reliever James Adkins (L, 0-1) with a double to right-center by Harrilchak.

The Bunn All-Stars were the highest-finishing team from North Carolina at the Dixie Youth Coach-Pitch Regional Tournament, which concluded last week at McLeod Park in Florence, S.C. Earlier, Bunn had won the D-Y District Tournament in Youngsville and took third place in the D-Y State C-P Tourney in Dunn.

LOUISBURG -- First-year head coach Mike McGuire and the Louisburg College Hurricanes will begin their 2011 fall schedule with a home game on Sept. 7 against Wake Tech Community College.
First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Frazier Field on the LC campus.

Farewell to “Sister Betty”
After 12 years of dedicated service to the parishioners of Our Lady of the Rosary and the community of Louisburg, “Sister Betty” will be terribly missed.
In August 1999, Bishop Joseph Gossman assigned “Sister Betty” to the Louisburg area to form a parish. At that time, there was just a small group of Catholics who, through the generosity of Louisburg College, had the use of the college chapel for Sunday mass.

Four of 15 county schools meet AYP goals
Less than 30 percent, four, of the county’s 15 schools met Adequate Yearly Progress — a tool to measure proficiency in reading, language arts and math.
However, more than 86 percent of the county’s schools — 13 of 15 — showed improvement.

ABC scores show improvement
The state Department of Public Instruction released its ABC scores this week and Franklin County took a slight step forward — 14 of its 16 schools met expectations.
Last year, 13 of the county’s 16 schools met state expectations.
The results indicate how students performed on end-of-grade and end-of-course tests. The results include Cross Creek, which is a charter school.

Court date set for accused kidnapper
A Spring Hope man accused of kidnapping is scheduled to appear in court next week.
Holly Wood reported on July 8 that as she left her job at the Food Lion in Spring Hope, a man approached her asking for money.
When Wood told the man, later identified as Danny R. Harris, that she didn’t have any money, he forced his way into the 2011 Buick LaSabre she was driving.

Bunn not allowing Internet gaming
BUNN — After consulting with state prosecutors and its lobbying group, Bunn commissioners decided to keep Internet gaming out of town.
Last June, the Board of Commissioners placed a ban on Internet Sweepstakes gaming.
The decision came at a time when the operations were popping up all across the state, including within Franklin County and its municipalities.

Louisburg man threatens deputy with knife
Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Louisburg area man on charges that he put law enforcement officers in peril.
Dep. Daniel Wester reported on the evening of Aug. 3 that he responded to a domestic dispute in the 300 block of John Winstead Road.
According to the report, Barry Bell reported that his son, Anthony Bell, was causing trouble in the house.

Bunn High graduation rate declines while Franklinton, Louisburg increase
Save for Bunn High School, Franklin County seniors are graduating at an increasing rate.
And it was the first decline in the graduation rate at Bunn High School in a five-year span. Bunn went from a graduation rate of 80.57 percent to 78.48 percent from the 2009-10 school year to the 2010-11 school year.
According to information released by the Franklin County school system, Franklinton and Louisburg high schools both saw an increase in their graduation rates from the 2009-10 school year to the 2010-11 school.

Help “Build A Backpack” during tax-free weekend
Collections for school supplies for needy students in Franklin County at the Louisburg Walmart continue this weekend in full force in emphasis of the tax-free weekend.
The United Way of Franklin County has partnered with Walmart, in cooperation with Franklin County Schools and the Louisburg Police Department, to take donations of school supplies and monetary donations to get supplies as part of the statewide initiative “Build A Backpack” through Communities in Schools.

The United Way of Franklin County has successfully completed all of its 2011 United Way Worldwide membership requirements by their respective dates.
UWFC board of directors Chairman Dale Byrns said Friday that the certification reflects a continued commitment by the UWFC to be part of the United Way Worldwide efforts and vision while maintaining local focus and commitment on the human services needs here.

Police arrest Youngsville woman on drug charges
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Spring Hope man for breaking into a house of worship.
The morning of July 28, Daniel Massey reported that someone broke into Rocky Cross Holiness Church in the 900 block of Carlyle Road.
According to the report by Dep. Allen Batchelor, the suspect apparently busted out a front window to gain entry.

The call is going out to all Franklin County rescue and fire agencies, police departments and the Sheriff’s Office – we want to see, and taste, your best cooking!
As part of the 2011-12 United Way of Franklin County campaign, all the public servicemen and women are invited to participate in a collective cook-off on Oct. 8.
