Sparks is departing from LC
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College’s off-season winds of change swept through the men’s basketball program earlier this week as assistant coach Tim Sparks announced his resignation.
Sparks, who was instrumental in LC’s best-ever season last winter, has stepped down from his part-time duties after one year to become a health and physical education teacher at Renaissance Academy in his hometown of Virginia Beach.

Bunn 12s take second
BUNN -- Only a strong team from Wendell kept the Bunn All-Stars from having an opportunity to win the Tar Heel League District 12-Under Softball Tournament two weekends ago.
Bunn, coached by James Goodwin, went 2-2 overall at the event -- with both losses coming against Wendell.
Still, Bunn finished regular season and tournament action with an impressive 11-3-2 overall mark.

LOUISBURG -- Coming off its best campaign in school history, Louisburg College will begin its 2011-12 men’s basketball schedule on Nov. 1 with a home game against the University of South Carolina-Sumter.
Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the historic, refurbished Holton Gymnasium on the LC campus.

Instructors Graduate
Candace Curtis received her associate of arts degree from Nash Community College. She also has earned her early educator’s certification. Curtis will transfer to East Carolina University this fall, majoring in elementary education. Her parents are Scott and Joan Curtis.

The family of a Franklin County soldier killed in Iraq in remembering a son and husband who answered the call to serve his country.
According to reports, Military Police Spc. Lucas Elliott was was returning from a mission in southern Iraq when the vehicle he was riding in ran over an improvised explosive device on July 15.

FRANKLINTON — A late night altercation erupted in gunfire, sending two people to the hospital, but not before one of them crashed into a Louisburg eatery.
According to Franklinton police, Officer A.J. Bishop responded to a call of shots being fired in the area of Sterling Street at about 11:40 p.m. Friday.

Youngsville discusses next administrator
YOUNGSVILLE — Town officials got the road map they will use to hire the next town administrator, a person they expect will guide the town into the future.
Commissioners fired long-time administrator Brenda Robbins in June after an investigation revealed that she was aware her son, streets and maintenance director Joey Patterson, among other things, used town employees, equipment and resources for personal use on town time.

Louisburg buys fire truck, finances sewer project
Financing and taxes were the bywords for the Monday night meeting of the Louisburg Town Council.
The council finalized the long-planned purchase of a new fire truck and put in place long-term financing for the nearly completed water and sewer line project that has been ongoing for nearly two years.
The fire truck will be a Pearce model and will replace a 1984-vintage tanker.

Franklinton considering lifting ban on sweepstakes cafes
FRANKLINTON — Town officials who took measures to ban sweepstakes cafes prior to a General Assembly ban said they are amenable to allowing the apparent legal version of the enterprises back in town — for a fee.
When sweepstakes cafes were all the buzz, Franklinton officials decided in March 2010 to institute a six-month moratorium on the establishments, refusing to consider any application until they had time to consider their impacts on the community.

YOUNGSVILLE — After busting a former town employee for allegedly using town equipment for personal uses, Police Chief Daren Kirts told commissioners that he’s having to use personal equipment for town use.
It was part of a message he  delivered last week, reiterating a need for more money and resources at the police department.

The bride is the daughter of Yvonne and Donald F. Ayscue Jr. of Henderson. She is the granddaughter of the late Janet and Donald Williams of Henderson, and Joyce Ayscue and the late Donald F. Ayscue, both of Henderson.

Cary Academy student Jimmy A. Joyner Jr. is the recipient of the 2011 $500 Vinson Orthodontics Scholarship. He was selected from a group of candidates based on his grades, SAT scores, and an essay that he wrote, among other things. The essay was about the challenges facing his generation and ideas for dealing with those challenges.

Young children need essential vitamins and minerals in their diet.  If a child does not receive the proper nutrients, he can become more susceptible to illnesses.
