He was selected from a group of candidates based on his grades, SAT scores, and an essay that he wrote, among other things. The essay was about the challenges facing his generation and ideas for dealing with those challenges.

GOOD MORNING: Well, it was nice while it lasted, but our short respite from the oppressive heat is apparently over, for the foreseeable future at any rate. Daytime highs locally returned to the 90’s again Monday with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 90’s Tuesday and possibly higher as the week progresses, possibly reaching the 100–degree mark or more Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

A celebration in honor of the Rev. Dazale Vines Kearney for her 25 years of preaching service will be held on July 23 at 5 p.m. at Old Liberty Missionary Baptist Church.
The guest preacher will be Dr. Coolidge McCoy. Music will be by the Old Liberty Gospel Choir, Elder Nathaniel Cooke (original Brooklyn All Star), Freddy Greene (jazzy sax), and the Rev. David Rosby.

Barton College in Wilson named 48 students to the President’s List and 219 students to the Dean’s List for spring semester 2011. President’s List students compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average; Dean’s List students achieved a grade point average of 3.3 or better on a four-point scale.

Trio arrested for trying to steal back repossessed car
Authorities arrested the second suspect in an assault that resulted in head injuries.
Mark Antione Smith, 31, of Kittrell, was arrested by Vance County authorities on Friday, charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and felony conspiracy — the result of a March 25 assault involving a skateboard and a stick in Louisburg.
