FRANKLINTON -- With the interior of his lineup depleted, Franklinton High School veteran girls basketball coach Lester Wilder turned to an old friend to secure a victory last Friday against Northern Carolina Conference foe Corinth Holders.
Wilder is a long-time devotee of full-court pressure defense, but he hasn’t been able to do much of it lately, mainly because of the powerful post presence his clubs have enjoyed.

Roanoke Rapids capped off its successful week -- and Franklin County three-peat -- with a 52-34 decision over the Wildcats.

YOUNGSVILLE -- The Youngsville Parks and Recreation Department is currently conducting signups for its upcoming baseball and softball seasons.
Ages are 4-19 for baseball and 7-14 for softball. The registration deadline is Feb. 26.
Assessments will be held on that same day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Youngsville Coach-Pitch Field.

Water contract dispute headed to court
Franklinton officials filed a complaint on Wednesday, asking the courts to settle a water dispute with Franklin County.
The documents were filed a day after town officials reviewed Franklin County’s proposal to quash the matter — by taking over control of the town’s water plant and its infrastructure, and assuming the $1 million in debt on the system
“That was their proposal,” said Franklinton Town Manager Larry Carver.

Three new members have joined the United Way of Franklin County board of directors as the 2010-11 campaign winds down.
A final total for the campaign is expected by month’s end, and the $120,000 goal was exceeded this year, Executive Director Kathy Harrelson said this week.

FRANKLINTON — Officials and staff used a day-long retreat on Thursday to get a more intimate look at town departments, ordinances and finances.
They plan to use those findings to make decisions in the quickly approaching future.
“Retreats make life a lot easier,” said Mayor Elic Senter. “It gives us one day devoted to looking back and looking forward.”

After a September fire closed Gigi’s Bistro, Stephan Bezzina is ready to open the doors for business on Monday.
After clearing debris and ash from the restaurant floor  four months ago, Bezzina said he never doubted that he’d be back open again.

In-home nurse sentenced for fraud, theft
A woman charged with stealing nearly $12,000 from an in-home patient paid her debt, nearly in full, this week.
Franklinton police arrested Sherree Kearney in April, charging her with 30 counts each of financial card fraud, financial card theft and identification theft.
Investigators also charged the Wake Forest woman with two counts of criminal receipt of goods and services fraud.
