Grant to create county's first nature preserve
Scenes like this are rapidly disappearing in Franklin County but this one will be preserved for future generations
Grant to create county's first nature preserve

RALEIGH -- Franklinton and Louisburg's plans to expand recreation and open space opportunities have been bolstered by state grants.
Last month, the state awarded nearly $11 million to trail development, restoration and other projects in the Piedmont -- including $500,000 for Franklinton and $100,000 for Louisburg.

Critter care policies prove tough to write

LOUISBURG -- For more than a year, efforts to craft standard operating procedures for the county's animal shelter have gotten as tangled as a leash attached to a rambunctious dog.
But, during the July 29 meeting of the Franklin County's Animal Services Advisory Board, county staff and board members appeared to straighten out the issue.

AN AUGUST SNOW STORM?
AN AUGUST SNOW STORM?

Well, not exactly but it was still a lot of fun, especially for youngsters like Carter Jones (arms upraised) and his friends. Leave it to Franklinton to take the traditional Police Night Out and convert it to an afternoon of fun for children and adults alike -- and to meet the town's police officers and even collect school supplies. See more photos on Page 10. Oh, and that's not snow, its foam, fun but a lot warmer.

New spirit of cooperation could benefit us all!
New spirit of cooperation could benefit us all!

It was almost disorienting -- enough so that some of us had to double-check to be sure what we were seeing and hearing was real.
There is evidence of a new spirit of cooperation, at least in the southwestern corner of Franklin County -- and if it continues and expands, it could bode well for the rest of us.
At a meeting of the Franklin County Board of Education last week, three agreements were approved -- and that could mark a change in the rather parochial way of thinking that has limited potential for many years.

Championship-caliber reunion serves as a big teaching lesson
Championship-caliber reunion serves as a big teaching lesson

Last week, members of Coach Larry Lindsey's boys and girls basketball teams from the late 1960s to 1970 gathered to remember the man who helped mold them and turn them into champions -- on and off the court.
It was quite the experience, getting to listen to family, contemporaries and former players share stories.
What I also suspect is there were plenty of stories they could have told if two reporters weren't present and the Youngsville Museum of History wasn't the setting.
But, that's not the point.

Political leaders can't grasp 'common sense' water solution

Dear editor: After reading your "My Turn" article in the August 14, 2025 edition of The Franklin Times regarding the Town of Louisburg funded engineering study of building off-stream reservoirs to meet the town's future water needs.
The concept makes sense and is backed up by a professional engineering analysis!

Where is justice found in Franklin County?

Dear editor: On Dec. 24, 2024, after 5 p.m., Franklin County sheriff's deputies came to the home of Perry and Ernestine Mosley in Alert and took them to Louisburg to question them about the rape of their granddaughter which supposedly happened on Dec. 22, 2015 when she was 10 years old.
At Louisburg they were immediately arrested. Ernestine's bond was $40,000 and Perry's was later set at $3.4 million.

Finding adequate water for county

Dear editor: Gary Cunard, your persistence is to be admired! Not many people have the knowledge and willingness to stand up to unreasonable situations for 30 years.
The Good Lord has provided us with water drilled from the ground and collected from the Tar River. This supply is becoming more and more limited.
The pipe from Kerr Lake gives us a small addition. Our population is an ever-increasing number and more and more and more urbanized.
