Italian Class Begins at VGCC Franklin Campus
An Italian course for beginners is being offered by Vance-Granville Community College this fall. Classes will be held on Mondays, Sept. 10 through Nov. 12, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the college’s Franklin County Campus, located on N.C. 56 about one mile west of Louisburg. Whether a student needs practical language for a trip to Italy or just wants a fun learning experience, instructor Giulia Vitale of Warrenton thinks that anyone can benefit from the class. She added that students will learn practical vocabulary, as well as recipes, and no previous knowledge of Italian is required. “From ordering food to chatting about your family, this course will get you talking in Italiano!” Vitale said. She promised a “relaxed, comfortable atmosphere” and noted that the class can be a fun activity for a couple. The course is based on hand-outs, but students are encouraged to bring any teach-yourself Italian book, audio tape, CD, or dictionary that they may have. A native of Great Britain, Vitale lived in Italy for more than a decade. She said that her background gives her a combination of experience with Italian language and culture from the perspective both of an insider and that of an outsider. Vitale holds a Master’s degree in Italian Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. The cost of the course is $50. For more information and to register, call (919) 496-1567.

China Painting Class
Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg will once again host a China Painting class this fall. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., Sept. 11 through Dec. 4. Instructor Jane Edwards Miskie has been teaching china painting classes since the early 1980s at the main VGCC campus, the Louisburg campus and the Franklin County Art Center. Miskie said that in the Victorian era, American “ladies” were expected to attempt china painting, but this ceased with World War I, when fine porcelain imports from Europe were interrupted. The art was revived in the late 1950s in California, and quickly caught on again. Today, there are china painting clubs throughout the world. “China painting is one of the easiest types of painting, because it is not limited to people who can already draw,” Miskie said. Mistakes are easily fixed, since the paint does not dry until the piece is “fired.” Once fired, the painted piece is safe for microwaves and dishwashers. In the 19th century, young ladies impressed friends and prospective husbands with their creative painting of dishes and vases, but today, Christmas ornaments and coffee mugs are also among favorite pieces for painting. The cost of the course is $54. For more information and to register, call (919) 496-1567.

Scrapbooking Class at VGCC Franklin Campus
Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus will offer a course on scrapbooking and photo organization this fall. Classes will be held on Mondays, Sept. 17 through Nov. 19, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Instructor Denise Quinn said that the class “will be like attending a weekly scrapbooking party.” Participants will not only learn how to preserve their stories and photos but will also have the opportunity to start and finish a complete album. They will receive information and instructions about creating safe, meaningful photo albums. “This class will provide you with ideas and opportunities to complete your own album,” Quinn said. “As your instructor, I will encourage and celebrate your progress as you create a timeless photo album, quickly and easily. You will have a personal assistant to help you every step of the way.” Both digital and traditional albums/scrapbooks will be covered, in addition to Picfolio Albums. Album Kit options will be available at the first class. “Photo albums build relationships, strengthen self-esteem and remind us of what is important in our lives,” Quinn said. “However, unless you preserve your memories in photo-safe albums using photo-safe products, the photos and the stories behind them will be lost forever.” The cost of the class will be $50, plus supplies. For more information and to register, call the Franklin County Campus at (919) 496-1567.
