GERALD J. EURY

LOUISBURG—Gerald Jackson Eury, age 80, passed away December 25, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family following a brief illness.  Gerald is the son of the late Joseph Clay Eury, Sr. and Myrtle Dement Eury.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph “JC” Eury, Jr., Ray Eury, Archie Eury, and a sister, Deloris Andrews.

Gerald served as an MP at the Atomic Bomb Test site in Nevada for the US Army. After leaving the Army he was a prison guard at POPE Correctional Center in Raleigh.  He later continued his career with the Town of Louisburg as a Police Officer and later as an Engineer for the Fire Department. During this time he also served as a magistrate.  Gerald and Barbara owned and operated Youth University Playschool and Daycare until retirement.  Soon after Gerald realized that being retired was not what he wanted to do,  he joined the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office as a Bailiff where he served for several years. He was an active member of Louisburg Baptist Church and served in many capacities.

It was said that some of his favorite times were the years he and his wife worked at the daycare as he cared for and loved the children they kept and in return were loved by them. Gerald truly enjoyed people and the friendships he made throughout the years; he treasured them all.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2013, at Louisburg Baptist Church, 302 North Main Street, Louisburg.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Smith Eury; sons, Jerry (Rose) Holmes of Louisburg, Tom (Kris) Eury of Howes Cave, NY, and a daughter, Robin (Elliott) Pinnell of Louisburg; grandchildren, Jonathan “JR” (Jessica) Holmes of Raleigh, Leslie (fiancé Kevin) Holmes of Charlotte, Stephanie Pinnell of Raleigh, Brandi Pinnell of Raleigh, Samantha Eury of Howes Cave, NY and Nathan Eury of FL; and a brother, George (Ester) Eury of Franklinton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Louisburg Baptist Church, P.O. Box 730, Louisburg, NC  27549. Arrangements are being handled by Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services, 804 N. Bickett Boulevard, Louisburg, NC.  Online condolences may be made to www.lancasterfcs.com.
