ELIZABETH H. OPYD

GREENSBORO - Elizabeth H. Opyd entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, May 6, 2017 in the company of family in Greensboro.

Born in Louisburg as Linnie Elizabeth Harper on Sept. 10, 1926, she grew up on the farm her parents acquired in 1935. As a young woman during World War II, she worked as a secretary in the naval shipyard at Norfolk, VA, where she met Martin Opyd of Chicago. After marriage, they spent fifty years in Chicago, where they raised four children, then returned to the farm in Louisburg for a dozen years and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June of 2015. Elizabeth moved to Greensboro to be near family in January, 2017.

She realized the uniqueness in, appreciated the individual gifts of, and dearly loved each member of her family.

All her life she was a faithful servant of our Lord, never letting an opportunity pass to cheerfully tell anyone she met, the mail carrier, employees in doctors' offices, repair people, and even fellow customers in line at the grocery store, about her Savior.

She is survived by sons, Walter (Nancy) of San Jose, CA, and Daniel (Petra) of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Martin Sr., and two children, Elizabeth Anne and Martin Jr., preceded her in death.

She donated her body to the Brodie School of Medicine at East Carolina University. A memorial service for both Martin and Elizabeth will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church (111 Laurel Mill Road, Louisburg, NC 27549) at noon on July 29, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
