MYRTLE CORBETT KING
July 8, 1919 - July 4, 2021

LOUISBURG, NC--Myrtle Corbett King, 101, passed away on July 4, 2021, just four days short of her 102nd birthday. Born on July 8, 1919, in Selma, North Carolina, Mrs. King moved to Louisburg in 1947 when she married the late John William King.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith and accomplishments that have served as an inspiration not only to her family, but to all those who knew her well.

Her personal and professional experiences include service to the U.S. Army after the start of World War 11 with placement at Fort Bragg, the Pentagon, and the Army Corp of Engineers. Having attended Business School in Washington, D.C., her professional life also included positions in finance, business development, real estate investment and management culminating in a long and illustrious 25-year career at Louisburg College, where she was initially secretary to the Dean of Students and advanced to Director of Student Housing.

Mrs. King placed faith and family first in her life. She was one of the founding members of the Henderson Church of Christ, which initially met in Louisburg for 8 years. She helped recruit preachers and prepared the Communion elements before services.

In 1999, Mrs. King published a book, "Anna Long Thomas Fuller's Journal," a diary spanning the years from 1856 to 1890.

She was a member of the Louisburg Historical Society and belonged to the O. Henry Book Club, which she joined in 1949.

One of 10 siblings, Mrs. King's mother died when she was only 11. Her father was unable to care for the three younger siblings who remained at home during those lean Depression years, so she went to live with her older sister, the late Breattie O'Neal of Louisburg.

Mrs. King is survived by her three children, John King of New Bern, Breattie (Bebe) Nicholson of Georgia, Mary King Lee of Georgia, their spouses, April Dean King of New Bern, Leland Blair Nicholson of Georgia, seven grandchildren, Rosalyn Powell, Allen Lee, Blair Ford, Lee Nicholson, John Nicholson, Ashley King and Jay King, 14 great-grandchildren, her nieces Jackie Kimball, Rhoda Janosik, nephews Clarence Corbett, Andy Corbett, JD Corbett, William Corbett, Bill King, and his wife Ginger King, brother-in-law Kay Mowery and his wife Lynda, along with a number of great nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.

Along with cherished memories, she leaves to her family the strength of her faith and the power of her love. When asked at her 100th birthday what words of wisdom she would offer, Mrs. King said, "No matter how dark things get, there is always a bright side."

A visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services, 804 N Bickett Blvd. in Louisburg. A Celebration of Life service will begin in the chapel of the funeral home at 3 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Louisburg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Henderson Church of Christ, 1211 Dorsey Drive, Henderson, NC.

Arrangements are being handled by Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services, 804 N. Bickett Blvd., Louisburg, NC 27549. Online condolences may be made to www.lancasterfcs.com
