JOSEPH HARTWELL OVERTON
September 21, 1938 - April 30, 2024
Joseph Hartwell Overton

CONCORD, NC -- Joseph Hartwell Overton died unexpectedly on April 30, 2024 in Concord, NC at the age of 85.

Hartwell is survived by wife, Betty Ayscue Overton; children Joy Safrit (Jon) of Kannapolis, NC; Melody Dahllof (Barry) of Bear, DE; Derek (Heather) of Palm Coast, FL; grandchildren Noah, Gabi and Caleb Dahllof and Ethan and Aubrey Overton. He was preceded in death by his father Rev. Jobe Overton, mother Catherine Yeargin Overton and brother Colin Overton.

Hartwell was born on September 21, 1938 in Oxford, NC. He attended Kings Business College. He married Betty Ayscue in 1958.

After moving to Charlotte, NC he began working for the FBI, where he would stay until his retirement in 1999.

Hartwell will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who loved the Lord and his family. He was a constant encouragement to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He deeply loved his church, Northside Baptist, where he served as a deacon, choir member and Jolly Sixties volunteer. Hartwell enjoyed cheering on the Duke sports teams, preferably with the commentary muted. He found joy in reading his Bible, spending time in prayer, being involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren and sitting in the chair with his grand-dog Gadget.

The funeral is scheduled for Friday, May 10, at Northside Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. Visiting hours will be at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Hartwell's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Senior Adult Program of Northside Baptist Church at 333 Jeremiah Blvd Charlotte, NC 28262. The family would like to thank Diane Propst, Northside Baptist Church members, and the many friends and family who have reached out to all of us during this time.
