As summer swings into high gear, more and more people are heading outdoors to enjoy the numerous activities, such as hiking and camping, Franklin County has to offer.
But while the exercise these outings provide is fabulous, it also increases the risk for one to contract tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease.

The United Way of Franklin County Youth Leadership Team is calling on local youth ages 14-18 to join a group effort in volunteering for the 2012 UWFC Build-A-Backpack Program.
Youth volunteers are needed for July 27, Aug. 3, Aug. 10 and Aug. 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. to hand out flyers and take donations for school supplies and backpacks for students in need in Franklin County for the 2012-13 school year.
The Franklin County Democratic Party Executive Committee, along with the Democratic Women of Franklin County, provided and served lunch to 75 individuals recently at the Blessing Soup Kitchen in Louisburg.
Five County First in Families will present Family Night, hosted by Howes Your Pizza, 23 Highway 98 East, Bunn, on Monday, July 2, 5 to 9 p.m.
Ten percent of sales will be donated to Five County First In Families, a non-profit organization which helps individuals with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries by providing families with resources, information and services they need to live healthy, happy lives.

People who live in Louisburg and drive past Louisburg High School have noticed a large hole being excavated adjacent to the football field.
Since I live near Louisburg, I have been asked “why in the world are they digging that big hole downhill from the high school?”
The Fourth of July is almost upon us -- and with it comes celebrations, picnics, swimming, outdoor activities and, unfortunately, some serious dangers.
But a little common sense can make the upcoming holiday period both fun and safe.
During this time of the year, fireworks contribute to a lot of holiday injuries -- even the supposedly safer varieties that are available to the public.
GOOD MORNING: While I’m not quite ready to toss in the towel just yet, I am pushing 85, and there was an article in this past Sunday’s N&O, “Growing older, one ache or ailment at a time,” by Todd Jones, that prompted me to go ahead and thank all of our readers, past and present, now for allowing me to come into their lives in so many ways over the years while I’m still on my feet and able to do so.

Further investigation also revealed that Brandon Sills is a suspect in a Franklinton breaking and entering.
Deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute at a home in the 200 block of Stephen Taylor Road the morning of June 26.

ZEBULON -- Youngsville Firecrackers coach Davis Capps didn’t need much of a scouting report before his club tangled with Louisburg on Wednesday in the championship round of the Tar Heel 10-Under Softball Tournament.
The players from both Youngsville and Louisburg were plenty familiar with each other -- and several of them even compete together for the Franklin County Blaze Travel Ball Team.

BUNN -- Due to their tender ages, most of the Youngsville Nationals players didn’t understand the significance of their championship at the Dixie Youth Coach-Pitch District Baseball Tournament.
They just wanted the opportunity to touch the first-place trophy.
Indeed, the Nationals’ performance was one for the history books as Youngsville won its first-ever D-Y Coach-Pitch crown on Wednesday at the Bunn Elementary School Field.

ZEBULON -- With pitching ace Abigail Fagan unavailable for the first two games due to a broken arm, Louisburg fell into the loser’s bracket at the Tar Heel 10-Under District Softball Tournament.
Louisburg, coached by Robert Fagan, was able to work all the way to the finals in the double-elimination format, but the All-Stars finally ran out of steam in the championship round against a familiar foe in the Youngsville Firecrackers.
LOUISBURG -- The Louisburg College fast-pitch softball team has once again earned Academic All-American status from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
The Lady Hurricanes, coached by Don Stopa, boasted a 3.4 team grade-point average for the 2011-12 school year.
Over 450 teams from across the United States qualified for academic accolades.
