BUNN — Organizers are putting the final touches on plans to host a community event this spring, and now they have a marketing logo in place to hit the ground running.
Dr. Cletus Simpson with Bunn Family Dentistry and the town, including administrative assistant Kimberly Files, have been working for months to bring the first Bunn Fun Run to town.

County commissioners approved a lease in March 2009, giving Triangle Skydiving Center the green light to open their business at Triangle North Executive Airport.

RALEIGH – The American Civil War wrought great hardship upon the state and nation. North Carolina suffered at least 35,000 deaths and felt more than its share of pain. The nation and state survived the war years, 1861-1865, but at great price.
RALEIGH - Funeral services for Winnie Yarborough-Crudup, 90, who died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, will be held at noon today (Saturday, Feb. 12) at Deliverance Cathedral of Love, with the Rev. Phillip Pulley officiating. Burial will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens.
FRANKLINTON —Andrew Jackson “A.J.” Perkinson, 78, died Monday evening, Feb. 7, 2011 at Duke-Raleigh Hospital. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Faith Baptist Church in Youngsville. Burial, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 52, followed in Fairview Cemetery.
HOLLISTER - Funeral services for Michael Dean Lynch, 50, who died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, were held Friday, Feb. 11, at Pine Chapel Baptist Church, with Bishop Shelton Daniel officiating. Burial followed in the Tilman-Lynch cemetery.
ZEBULON - James Robert Perry, 94, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 10, at Union Hope Baptist Church. Burial was in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Zebulon.
YOUNGSVILLE - Patricia Ann “Patty” Peters, 51, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 at Wake Medical Center. She was born in Anchorage, Alaska, the daughter of Mittie Davis Peters and Bobby Peters.
LOUISBURG – Elaine Bowden Wood, 86, of Louisburg, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday evening.
In case you haven’t noticed, it’s Girl Scout cookie time in Franklin County — and unloading the goodies is quite a task. The Franklin County Girl Scouts picked up 2,234 cases of cookies on Wednesday — and this line of volunteers handled their fair share and then some. Watch for sales this weekend at area stores.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Henderson man on drug charges during a traffic stop.
Officers charged Robert Milton Wilson, 45, with felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The party in power — or which thinks it is —- wants to appoint a sheriff.
The party out of power — but drooling over the prospects of gaining it — wants to hold an election for a new sheriff.
Such is the dilemma in Franklin County where the economy is in the toilet, jobs have evaporated, the schools are facing a financial slashing not seen since the Great Depression and no one seems to give a flip.
Never in all the years that I have been covering school board meetings have I ever encountered vinegar, baking soda and a lighted candle.
But Monday night they were there — and the science “trick” that followed taught a little science but offered some insight into the challenges our schools face.
GOOD MORNING: I would be hesitant to say that, however, if weather conditions are the same this morning as they were Thursday morning when I went down to pick up the morning paper shortly after 5 a.m.
It had just begun to snow, but fortunately outdoor temperatures were just a tad above freezing at that time and it didn’t amount to much.

It has been a real pleasure to read the letters and articles about the ex-sheriff and the abortion issue.
It really touched my heart to read one from a person that feels he could have been one of the 3,000-plus-a-day count. Thanks to his birth mother he wasn’t and now is serving God and mankind every day. To God be the glory!

Your Feb. 9 edition included a box showing that 72.6 percent of county citizens favored a special election to replace Sheriff Green, with only 27.4 percent favoring the Board of Commissioners choosing someone to fill the job until the next regular election. I always take polls with a grain of salt, as they can often be slanted to get the answers you want.

I agree with Franklin County Republican Party Chairman Jeremy Neal that a special election is needed for sheriff. In addition to Mr. Neal’s Wednesday letter to the editor, we have three Republican and four Democratic commissioners; however, who knows if all of the Democratic commissioners would want to appoint the same person for sheriff as would all of the Republican commissioners?

While this article will be brief, I want to begin to tell you about the next one, pending details that are still unfolding.
What happened, Pat? As many will read this article, I was a 2006 and 2010 voter for former sheriff Pat Green and I was baffled by the allegations that have come about.
Last Saturday, the Franklin County Arts Council (FCAC) Board gathered for a four-hour workshop, facilitated by Janie Wilson, the Arts in Communities director of the North Carolina Arts Council (NCAC).
The goals of the workshop included budgetary and program planning, as well as a reinforcement of the FCAC’s continued mission to serve the talented individuals and groups of Franklin County.
The Crosscreek Charter Middle School Science Olympiad Team placed in the Fossils category and was awarded a Time Warner Cable-sponsored grant for their first participation in the Olympiad. The Science Olympiad is a nationwide competition organized much like the athletic Olympics, but with science events such as bottle rockets and anatomy.
Mary Louise Hill, seated center, celebrated her 100th birthday party at the Louisburg Nursing Center on Jan. 31. Gov. Bev Perdue provided Hill with a certificate of acknowledgment and congratulations, Sen. Doug Berger presented her with a letter of recognition and Louisburg Mayor Karl Pernell issued a proclamation.
As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, we concentrate on the word ”love,” which can take various directions. As we think of the word love, it can have a variety of related but distinct meanings in different contexts.
It gets even more complicated when we refer to love in other languages and cultures. As we try to understand the concept of love, cultural differences make it a bit difficult to establish a universal definition.
North Carolina’s USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director Aaron Martin reminds Franklin County livestock producers that assistance may be available to producers dealing with harsh winter weather, which caused serious harm to livestock and forage.
