Baynes elected to the NADO Board
Timmy Baynes, executive director of the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments in Henderson, was elected to the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) 2010 – 2011 Board of Directors on Aug. 31 at NADO’s annual business meeting.
The meeting was held in conjunction with the association’s 43rd annual training conference in San Diego, Calif.

Lawrence competes in statewide pole top rescue competition
Cory Lawrence, a serviceman with Wake Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) in Wake Forest, had the honor of competing in the 12th Pole Top Rescue Competition for North Carolina’s electric cooperatives.  Lawrence has been with Wake EMC for 10 years.  Cory and his wife, Dana, live in Youngsville with their daughter, Grace Anne.

Wake Electric announces 2010 Bright Ideas Grant winners
Wake Electric of Wake Forest recently announced that 39 teachers in Johnston, Franklin, Granville, Wake, Nash, Durham and Vance counties have been awarded Bright Ideas grants, totaling more than $50,000 in grant monies.  The grants will be used for a variety of classroom programs throughout the school year.

BUNN -- What started out as a defensive standout turned into an offensive explosion in the third quarter for the Bunn Wildcats.
After not scoring a touchdown on offense until the 1:34 mark of the second period, the Wildcats erupted after the break and went on to defeat Franklinton by a 43-20 margin last Friday in a duel for second place in the Northern Carolina Conference football standings.

WARRENTON -- Louisburg excelled on both sides of the ball en route to posting a 42-6 road football victory last Friday at Warren County in a Northern Carolina Conference event.
The NCC decision was the first of the year for the Warriors, who are now 2-7 to go with a 1-3 league mark. Warren County remained winless at 0-9 and 0-5.

MARYVILLE, TENN. -- North Carolina Wesleyan College’s football team bounced back from last week’s disappointing league loss to CNU with a 34-16 USA South road victory at Maryville College last Saturday, ruining the Scots’ 2010 Homecoming.
The win leaves the Blue & Gold with a 4-3 overall record and 3-1 mark in conference action.

The Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce hosted a candidate’s forum Tuesday night — drawing candidates in races ranging from the county commission to the state Senate and Congress.

The Murphy House recalled nearly 5,000 pounds of ready-to-eat pork barbecue products that may be contaminated with salmonella.

Novozymes spells V-I-C-T-O-R-Y in United Way’s third annual spelling bee
The United Way’s 2010-11 campaign got off with a fantabulous start, officials said.
That’s because businesses, educators and others in the community got together for the organization’s campaign kickoff spelling bee — testing their wits in competition, spelling words much more difficult than fantabulous.
Overall, 19 teams competed at Louisburg Elementary School on Thursday night, raising an unofficial tally of $4,000.

Franklinton police arrested two more people connected with helping an alleged murderer flee from justice.
Investigators arrested Jessica Arrington, 22, of 15 Whitaker Street, on Wednesday; and they arrested Stephen Hawkins, 25, of 15 Mill Street on Thursday, charging them both with accessory after the fact.
