Colton Gibbs, from Edward Best Elementary School,  was awarded second place in the N.C. Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts poster contest. 
The contest is open to third- through sixth-grade students and the state event was held April 30  in the offices of the NC Division of Soil & Water Conservation in Raleigh.

Felled tree causes accident
A Louisburg woman and her two grandchildren escaped serious injury Monday morning after a downed tree forced the truck she was driving off the road and into a group of trees. Emergency responders said Donna Arnold, 57, was traveling north on U.S. 401, just before the Cascine Plantation, when a tree fell, shattering the windshield and obstructing Arnold’s view.

GOOD MORNING: When you come to think of it, the large majority of us have a lot to be thankful for every morning that we wake up, but that was especially true here in Franklin County last week when an alert “community member” discovered an apparent plot by perhaps as many as three students at Terrell Lane Middle School here in Louisburg to assault one of their teachers with knives while surfing a social networking website and, thank God, blew the whistle on them, thereby possibly preventing a great tragedy.

Ethan Benoit, 3, born with rare skeletal disease, dies
A  Zebulon-area toddler who captured the hearts of Franklin County residents and those beyond died this past weekend.
Ethan Benoit, who battled a rare genetic skeletal disease, died on Sunday according to family and published reports.
Benoit was three.
Funeral arrangements were not complete by press time.

Louisburg police are looking for a suspect who assaulted a pizza delivery person.
According to a report by Officer R.J. Harris, Christy Renee Holden, a Domino’s Pizza employee, was in the parking lot of the In & Out Store on S. Main Street when someone assaulted her at about 10:15 p.m. on Saturday.

The short session of the General Assembly has convened in Raleigh and the primary emphasis will be on filling an estimated 800 million dollar shortfall in the state budget that begins July 1. The elephant in both chambers, however, is November’s elections. All 170 seats are up for election and lawmakers know voters don’t like the direction our state is headed, are highly dissatisfied with both political parties and are unhappy with incumbents.

Louisburg Town Council adopts Code of Ethics
The Louisburg town council quickly and unanimously adopted a Code of Ethics Monday night and took a brief, pictorial tour of about 15 properties that are in violation of various town ordinances.
The Code of Ethics is now required by state law and the council passed Louisburg’s version despite the fact that Mayor Karl Pernell said ethics “haven’t been much of a problem here -- except with a past governor in Raleigh,” an obvious reference to the ongoing investigation of former Gov. Mike Easley.
