Mudcats open Apr. 7
ZEBULON -- The Carolina Mudcats will open their 2011 season with a five-game homestand at Five County Stadium on April 7 versus the Mobile Bay Bears in a Class AA Southern League contest.
The Mudcats, the Double-A affiliate of the 2010 N.L. Central Division champion Cincinnati Reds, will again play 70 home games at Five County Stadium in 2011.

Season closes for LC
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College’s women’s soccer season closed Tuesday in heartbreaking fashion as the Lady Hurricanes were edged 2-1 in overtime at the University of South Carolina-Sumter in the first round of the Region X Tournament.
LC, guided by second-year mentor Andy Stokes, wrapped things up with a 6-9-1 overall record.

County tells Franklinton water contract has dried up
Franklin County put Franklinton officials and staff on notice — the 40-year water contract is over.
County Manager Angela Harris sent a letter to Franklinton officials on Friday making that point clear.
“As Franklinton breached the prior contract, its term has ended,” Harris wrote in a letter dated Oct. 22 to Franklinton Mayor Elic Senter.

Franklin County voters will have an opportunity to cast ballots in a handful of locally contested races, as a commissioner seat and two state legislative positions will be up for grabs this Nov. 2.
The Franklin Times has given each candidate in those contested races the opportunity to share their platforms and express their goals if either elected or re-elected to office.

Early one-stop voting numbers behind 2008
More than 2,000 voters have gone in early to cast their ballots, getting a jump on the Nov. 2 general election.
One-stop voting began on Oct. 14 and by 10 a.m. Tuesday, 2,300 voters had cast their ballots in races ranging from the local board of commissioners to the U.S. Senate.

Justin and Amanda Varner are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Anna Klaire Varner, born May 22, 2010. She weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long.
Justin is in the U.S. Navy stationed in Iraq. Amanda lives in Laurinburg.

Bell graduates from artillery training
Army Pvt. Malcolm J. Bell graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Data Systems Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
As members of the Army’s field artillery team, the course is designed to train soldiers as specialists to operate the advanced field artillery tactical data systems for both cannon and multiple launch rocket systems.

Moderate turnout expected for uneventful, uninteresting election
Welcome to the last week of October, 2010.
The weather — at least at the time this was being written on Monday afternoon — resembled late March more than a traditional October.
It’s been cool some mornings, warm on others — and by the end of the day, it’s anybody’s guess what will have happened and what the temperature will be.

GOOD MORNING: The weatherman was obviously not kidding. Rain it has, pretty near 2 inches worth as of noontime Tuesday,  and that was a real Boomer that rattled the windows out my way just east of Louisburg in the middle of the night Monday.
The rain, perhaps, aided by clogged storm drains, pretty much had a portion of N.C. 56 between Bickett Boulevard and the Ronald Tharrington Road/East River Road intersection in Louisburg, under water there for a spell Tuesday morning.
