For the 27th time in a history that spans more than 200 years, Louisburg College officially has a new president today.
On Friday, the Rev. Dr. Mark D. La Branche was officially inaugurated as president of the college.
In reality, Dr. La Branche has been at the helm of the college since Jan. 1, 2009. Friday, however, was his formal inauguration.
Well now, there’s a challenge for some community-minded folks who have been looking for a project to throw their experience, expertise and enthusiasm behind.
The challenge is to upgrade the Louisburg Library, a facility that has been well used for 35 years at its current location but the building is coming to the end of its useful life.
GOOD MORNING: Things have really been slow on the news scene (and rumor mill, too) recently as evidenced by Barry Saunders devoting his column in the N&O Thursday morning to the weather — a practice that I’ve been guilty of on more than one occasion.
Four Franklin County high school students have each been awarded a $1,250 scholarship from Wake Electric.
Jewel Eason, principal of Bunn Elementary School, announces the Honor Roll for the third nine-weeks grading period.
To be named to the A Honor Roll, a student must make no grade lower than 93. To be named to the A/B Honor Roll, a student must make no grade lower than 85.

The Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity, Inc., Head Start is accepting children for the 2010-2011 Program Year.

LOUISBURG - Johnnie White Burnette, 85, of Louisburg died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Louisburg Nursing Center. He was born December 29, 1924 to William B. and Fannie Morton Burnette. He retired from The Hon Company as supervisor of maintenance. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Beal Burnette, and sister, Pearl White. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. from Maple Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Jay Tilley officiating.
The Five County Mental Health Authority is hosting a Town Hall meeting on underage drinking this coming Thursday.
The event, at the Louisburg Training Center on Wade Avenue, will feature addresses from town officials, law enforcement agents, representatives from Safe Space, the Department of Juvenile Justice and District Court Judge Quon Bridges.

LOUISBURG -- With only three guaranteed bids to the Class 2-A State Playoffs available in the Northern Carolina, it places a premium of importance on matches such as the one Wednesday evening between league foes Bunn and Louisburg.
Thanks to a strong first half, the Ladycats earned a key victory, winning 5-3 against host Louisburg at Patterson Field.
Bunn is now 1-2 in the NCC, with losses to conference powerhouses Roanoke Rapids and Franklinton. Another crucial league test for Bunn will come Monday versus North Johnston.

FRANKLINTON -- Even without the usual six players, Franklinton was still able to get the job done Thursday during a Northern Carolina Conference boys tennis match against Bunn.
The Wildcats were able to defeat Franklinton earlier in the campaign, but not the second time around as the Red Rams claimed a 5-4 decision at the FHS Courts.

STANHOPE -- After one inning, a slugfest appeared to be in store for Wednesday’s non-conference softball contest between Bunn and host Southern Nash.
Both teams exploded offensively in the opening frame, scoring four runs apiece.
However, neither club would be able to dent home plate again until the bottom of the 14th stanza.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Franklinton earned a piece of history during Wednesday’s girls soccer matchup at perennial power Roanoke Rapids.
Despite all of the strong teams FHS has fielded over the years, the Lady Rams had never been able to defeat the Jackets -- until Wednesday.
ZEBULON -- The left side of the Montgomery infield combined to go 7-9, leading the Biscuits past the Carolina Mudcats 8-4 at Five County Stadium on Thursday night in a Class AA Southern League baseball showdown.
Shortstop Drew Anderson had four hits, while third baseman Greg Sexton was 3-4 with a pair of doubles as the Biscuits (5-2) remained in first place in the Southern Division.
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College will host its final Region X baseball weekend today and Sunday at historic Frazier Field on the LC campus.
LC will entertain the University of South Carolina-Lancaster for a pair of 1 p.m. doubleheaders.

YOUNGSVILLE -- The Youngsville Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for its 13-14 and 15-19 Year-Old Baseball Leagues.
The registration deadline has been extended until April 22.

Franklin County’s decision makers were presented with three options they could use to fund the school system’s Early College High School program.
But they also asked staff to figure what happens if they don’t.
The discussion was part of a free-flowing joint meeting between commissioners, the county’s Board of Education and Vance-Granville Community College’s Board of Trustees.
