Special-use permit issued for agritourism
Franklin County Commissioners granted a special-use permit, giving a Franklinton couple a chance to take advantage of agritourism.
The decision came after a handful of residents expressed opposition.
Robert and Virginia Sykes petitioned the board for the permit to use a portion of their property for outdoor entertainment events.

Louisburg forms crime committee
In a move aimed at confronting the growing problem of crime in Louisburg, Mayor Karl Pernell appointed a four-person committee from the town Monday night with a request that they meet with District Attorney Sam Currin to determine what can be done.
Named to the committee were council members Mary Johnson, Freddie Hight and Joe Shearon, as well as Capt. Jason Abbott from the town’s police department.

John May’s path to the House 49 Seat vacated by Lucy Allen is clearer this week. And so is the path for candidates vying for his school board seat.
Last week, May received the local Democratic support he needed for appointment and May is slated to be sworn in on the House floor this Friday at 1 p.m.

Little Thomas Howard King was born with a disease that doesn’t allow his body to absorb nutrients.
However, the nearly 1-year-old youngster has filled his family and friends with hope and optimism.
Thomas needs a small bowel transplant and the family’s insurance will cover the procedure.
But there are some things insurance won’t cover, such as the bills the family will incur from hotel stays, visits, missed time from work and other costs.

Surfing the Web led a Franklinton woman to walk the streets.
With each step, Sharon Oyster and her team help raise money to combat Multiple Sclerosis — a disease that her son was diagnosed with three years ago.
The 2010 Triangle Walk MS takes place this Saturday, beginning at the RBC Center in Raleigh.

Deputy Williamson fund-raiser at Moose Lodge
A fund-raiser for an ailing deputy will take place this weekend.
The law enforcement community, including the sheriff’s office, police departments and some fire departments are planning an April 23-24 charity softball tournament to raise money for the family of Deputy James Williamson, who has been hospitalized since suffering a head injury while making an arrest in February.

Hospital gets accreditation
Franklin Regional Medical Center has been awarded national laboratory accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.
This is Franklin Regional’s fifth CAP Accreditation; their first was awarded in March 2002.  The laboratory’s director, Dr. Dell A. Dembosky, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided.

But Franklinton High School educators and law enforcers were quick to remind the gathered upperclassmen that drinking and driving is no laughing matter.

Wake Electric earmarks $50,000 for area teachers and classrooms
Wake Electric has allocated $50,000 for classroom-based projects through the Bright Ideas education grant program for the 2010-2011 school year. Teachers can apply online at www.ncbrightideas.com.

Watch out for the Hairy Man
As I write this article, I cannot help but think about today’s date, Tuesday the 13th, which is actually a “bad luck day” in Latin America. It is really the Spanish version of Friday the 13th , a perfect day to watch out for the Hairy Man.
Today, at lunchtime, I was invited by Charley-John Smith, professor at Louisburg College, to come to the auditorium and help to seat the children from three different counties who came to see a most interesting play for children called “Wiley and the Hairy Man.”

John May’s in the House
School Board member John May secured a Democratic Party subcommittee recommendation to replace Lucy Allen on House District 49 on Thursday night.
Representatives in the Speaker of the House’s office said May could be sworn in on April 23.
“To get unanimous support from the Democratic Party was humbling and gratifying,” May said of Thursday night’s vote by Franklin, Nash and Halifax county’s House District subcommittee — the group that was charged with recommending Allen’s replacement.

Employment Security Commission receives Governor’s Award
Understaffed and overworked, the state Employment Security Commission became the first North Carolina agency to receive the Governor’s Award for Excellence.
Earlier this week, Franklin County’s staff were bestowed with certificates, recognizing their roles in a state effort to help record numbers of people get the training or opportunities they need to get back to work.

Pilot Lions Park on commissioners’ agenda
Franklin County commissioners will be asked Monday night to award a contract to build the Pilot Lions Park.
Engineers with Site Solutions are recommending the county use the lowest responsive bidder, not the contractor who offered to do the project at the lowest price.
American Builder Inc., petitioned to do the project for $807,650.

Hangar construction practically complete
Contractors began pouring the concrete for a new airport hangar, putting operators a week away from adding another revenue generator at Triangle North Executive Airport.
Early last year, the airport’s governing board decided to slow down on one capital project — self-serve fuel service — and move forward with a new hangar to house corporate jets.
