Franklin County residents will get their first chance to cast a ballot for the spring primary beginning Thursday.
One-stop absentee voting begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, featuring two local races for the Democratic Party — the sheriff’s seat and the District 7 Senate seat.
Sheriff Pat Green is facing a Democratic challenge from Darryl Wright, a former Zebulon officer and county sheriff’s deputy.

On the day before local health care organizations open a collaborative clinic, Congressman Bob Etheridge wanted to make sure they understood the role their effort will play in bringing health care to all.
Jointly, Volunteers in Medicine, the Franklin County Health Department and the Rural Health group secured a $175,000 grant to provide staff at the health department who will be able to see the uninsured and underinsured residents of Franklin County.

Youngsville police arrested a Louisburg woman accused of being unruly outside a youth game on Friday night.
The initial call was a reported altercation involving a gun.
No one was injured and no gun was found, but police did arrest Stella Arnold, 60, charging her with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The law enforcement community is coming together this month to host a charity softball fundraiser to help an ailing deputy.
James Williamson has been hospitalized since he sustained injuries in a Feb. 27 arrest that resulted in severe head injuries.
Friends and family say he’s improving, moving from Duke’s intensive care unit to a rehab unit at WakeMed.

One of the reasons Dr. Mark La Branche was chosen as Louisburg College’s 27th president was because of his experience in guiding a university through treacherous terrain.
And, to a degree, it was that drive and determination that has the college recognizing his leadership now, rather than 12 months ago.

There was some “good” news this week as far as the North Carolina state budget was concerned.

Here’s the bottom line as far as the state budget is concerned.
Recent projections call for a budget deficit of $787.9 million for the 2010-11 fiscal year, which begins in July.

As a delinquent taxpayer, for the first time in years, I received notice 4/6/10 of my delinquency and a threatening bright orange paper basically stating “pay your taxes” (real estate) by 4/16/10 or face legal matters.

I would like to take a minute to discuss a disturbing event my wife and three young children were forced to witness this evening in Youngsville. As a parent of three children, the time had come to sign them up for sports – my son is in T-ball and my daughter is in the 8 and under softball league. I’m thrilled there is enough participation in T-ball that all the games will be played at Louisburg High School with all Louisburg participating teams.

RALEIGH - Elsie Thompson Webb, 84, widow of Arthur Webb, formerly of Chapel Hill and Franklinton, died recently at Rex Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Strickland of Youngsville were honored on their 60th wedding anniversary by their daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and John Irwin, at the Peddler Steak House in Raleigh. Family and friends attended the celebration. The couple were married April 8, 1950.
Sergeant Major Joe Louis Vines Sr. recently retired from the U. S. Marine Corps after 30 years of service. A ceremony in recognition of his service and accomplishments was held at the School of Infantry-West, Camp Pendleton, Calif., on March 12, 2010.
Vines was born in Spring Hope in 1960, the son of Cassie Vines and the late Grover Vines Sr. He is a 1980 graduate of Bunn High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 1979. He began recruit training at Parris Island, S.C. in June 1980.
WAKE FOREST — A Youngsville man was killed this past weekend in a motorcycle wreck.
According to Wake Forest police, Lawrence Joseph Barrett, 50, was riding a 2008 Harley Davidson westbound on Elm Avenue at about 4:50 p.m. on Sunday when he collided with a 2005 Ford Freestyle that was northbound on South White Street.
The following Franklin County students were named to the Headmaster’s List or A/B Honor Roll for the third-quarter grading period at Kerr-Vance Academy in Henderson.

LOUISBURG -- On a weekend that saw the world’s best golfers competing for the green jacket at The Masters, it was only fitting that Louisburg College yelled ‘four’ to complete its Region X home series against the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie.
Louisburg swept USC-S in the four-game series as the Hurricanes remained in a strong third-place position in the league standings under second-year head coach John Thomas.
