BUNN -- With his team two days away from its most important contest of the season to date, Franklinton High School girls soccer coach Deran Coe hoped his Lady Rams wouldn’t overlook one order of business Monday afternoon.
Such as securing a Northern Carolina Conference victory against Franklin County rival Bunn at the BHS Soccer Complex.
Coe got his wish as the Lady Rams dominated from the get-go and went on to post an impressive 8-1 conquest against the Ladycats.

But it wasn’t going to be easy, as the Ladycats were slated to encounter a North Johnston squad that was considered the preseason favorite in the NCC.

Godwin to return on Saturday
When he was the head baseball coach at Louisburg College, Billy Godwin literally built the clubhouse behind the home dugout at Frazier Field.
The area, which is located on Frazier’s first-base side, used to feature only a dugout.
Godwin decided to add a clubhouse that would provide players with locker-room space and a lounge area to watch television. A bigger storage area was also part of the facility.

LOUISBURG -- Nash County has a rich history of sending fast-pitch standouts to compete for the Louisburg College softball program.
And Nash Central’s Megan Murray is adding her name to that impressive list during the 2010 season.
Murray is a freshman first baseman for the Lady Hurricanes, who are in the process of building a strong squad under second-year head coach Monica Gordy.

County standouts claim spots on All-NCC team
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Roanoke Rapids won the Northern Carolina Conference’s regular season championship this past season, so it’s no surprise that the Yellow Jackets claimed the top prizes on the All-NCC Boys Basketball Team for the 2009-10 campaign.
RRHS post Kareem Martin, who has signed to play football at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, was selected as the NCC Player of the Year.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College has reached the 20-victory plateau on the softball diamond this spring -- but the Lady Hurricanes aren’t intent on stopping there.
Thanks to a successful four-game road sweep, Louisburg is now 20-10 overall in Monica Gordy’s second season as the head coach.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The Northern Carolina Conference has honored its All-NCC swimmers for the 2009-10 season.
Franklinton’s Shelby Freese was saluted as the Girls Most Valuable Performer, while Roanoke Rapids’ Ben Harrell was the Boys MVP.
Coach of the Year went to Pam Dennison from Roanoke Rapids.

MEMPHIS -- Sophomore Kevin Brandt struck out a career-best 11 batters and tossed his first career complete game helping No. 27 East Carolina University to a 3-2 win over Memphis and its first Conference USA baseball series win of the season.
With the win, the Pirates improve to 20-12 overall and 3-3 in league play, while the Tigers drop to 14-18 and 5-4.
ECU is coached by Northern Nash alum and Nash County resident Billy Godwin.

YOUNGSVILLE  — Town commissioners decided they needed more information before deciding whether or not to approve a Sweepstakes cafe operation that would be the town’s second and its biggest.
There is one Sweepstakes Internet Cafe within the town’s limits, but the proprietor of that operation only had to secure a business permit because it only has two computer terminals — which is within the town’s already existing allowances.

County Democrats select May as their choice to succeed Allen
Officials within the Franklin County Democratic Party agreed to cast their lot with John May to replace Lucy Allen as its House District 49 representative.
May received the informal Party nod, beating out challenges from Economic Development Director Ronnie Goswick and Bennie Ray Gupton, who withdrew his name from consideration before the Democratic Party took a straw poll to see who they would support.

Court rules in favor of medical examiner in Larry Green lawsuit
An appellate court ruled this week that a former Franklin County medical examiner is beyond the touch of a state lawsuit that alleged he was partly responsible for mistakenly declaring a man dead.
The family of Larry Green filed a lawsuit in Franklin County Superior Court in December 2007, claiming that Dr. J.B. Perdue, Franklin County and a host of firefighters and paramedics were responsible for poor health care which resulted in Green’s crippled state.

Former Department of Social Services employee files wrongful termination suit
A former department of social services employee filed a lawsuit, accusing the department, Franklin County and others of wrongful termination.
Attorneys for Lynda Collins filed a lawsuit on March 4, alleging that Franklin County, County Manager Angela Harris, DSS Director Nicki Perry and County Commission Chairwoman Penny McGhee were responsible for discriminatory and retaliatory acts that led to her termination in 2009.

Events planned to recognize the plight of the uninsured
Franklin County’s free clinic operators have prepared a host of events this month to recognize the plight of those who are either uninsured or underinsured.
The biggest deal is the addition of staff at the health department who will be able to see free clinic patients, giving them a medical home for acute and long-term care as part of the Franklin County Health Care Collaborative Clinic.

Would an Entrepreneurial Fair help create jobs in Franklin County?
That idea was floated Thursday morning by Mark McArn, chairman of the Franklin County Economic Development Commission.
The goal, he explained, would be to “help start-ups and new businesses in Franklin County become successful.”

The Franklin County Republican Party held its  annual County Convention at the Hamilton Hobgood Courthouse  Annex in Louisburg last month, giving candidates for Congress, the legislature and board of  commissioners a chance to address delegates and guests about local, regional and federal issues.
