CHARLOTTE - Harriet Harris Hicks, 76, died Saturday, May 15, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, in Murfreesboro at the Murfreesboro Methodist Church.
The short session of the General Assembly has convened in Raleigh and the primary emphasis will be on filling an estimated 800 million dollar shortfall in the state budget that begins July 1. The elephant in both chambers, however, is November’s elections. All 170 seats are up for election and lawmakers know voters don’t like the direction our state is headed, are highly dissatisfied with both political parties and are unhappy with incumbents.

The Louisburg town council quickly and unanimously adopted a Code of Ethics Monday night and took a brief, pictorial tour of about 15 properties that are in violation of various town ordinances.
The Code of Ethics is now required by state law and the council passed Louisburg’s version despite the fact that Mayor Karl Pernell said ethics “haven’t been much of a problem here -- except with a past governor in Raleigh,” an obvious reference to the ongoing investigation of former Gov. Mike Easley.
Angela D. Morris-Manning, daughter of Thomas and Sandra Morris of Louisburg, received her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University in Knoxville, Tenn., on May 14.
Sydney Dickerson, daughter of Dick and Susy Dickerson of San Antonio, Tex., and granddaughter of Beth and R.C. Dickerson of Wake Forest, graduated from Texas A&M University on May 15 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical science.

LOUISBURG -- For the Louisburg Warriors, the most pertinent difference between competing on the Class 1-A and 2-A levels wasn’t destined to be displayed until the postseason.
In the past, the Warriors would usually draw a no-contest game in the opening round of the Class 1-A level -- after Louisburg had rolled through the Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference.
GREENSBORO -- Marissa Bellamy ran the race of her life last Saturday -- but was thwarted in her attempt to repeat as a state title holder.
Bellamy broke her own state mark in the Girls 200 Finals as part of the Class 2-A State Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T University’s Aggie Stadium.

FRANKLINTON -- It’s state championship or bust for the Franklinton Lady Rams soccer program.
In the past, FHS head coach Deran Coe would consider a match against a Triangle/Triad opponent as a respectability-type match.
A victory, Coe surmised, would help show that part of the state the kind of program he has built at Franklinton.
Sheilah Cotten is no stranger to being inducted into Halls of Fame.
For her athletic prowess, Cotten earned a spot in the East Carolina University Hall of Fame.
And for her coaching abilities, Cotten was part of the inaugural class into the Louisburg College Athletic Hall of Fame three years ago.
ZEBULON -- The Carolina Mudcats (17 – 20) built a 6-1 lead on Sunday afternoon only to see it evaporate late in the game as the Jacksonville Suns (24-12) rallied to take a one run lead in the top of the ninth, before the Mudcats came up with a pair in the bottom half to win their fifth game in a row 8-7 in front 5, 328 fans at Five County Stadium in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.

HENDERSON -- It was an understatement to say that Kerr-Vance Academy’s baseball team had a Franklin County flavor during the 2010 campaign.
The Spartans boasted eight county residents on its squad this spring -- Chandler Loyd, Cameron Capell, Tyler Bolton, Christopher Lanham, Patrick Stewart, Jon Dickens, Josh Southerland and Parker Smith.
FRANKLINTON -- The annual Franklinton High School Football Camp is scheduled for June 28-30 at the FHS Football Field.
Cost is $40 per person, which includes a T-shirt. The camp is open to children in grades 1-12 and will run from 8 a.m.-noon each day.
There will be a Most Valuable Player in every age group, along wth a cookout and plenty of fundamental-oriented workouts.
Louisburg High School outfielder Joel Bendel takes a mighty cut at an offering during the Warriors’ matchup with South Granville last Friday in the first round of the Class 2-A Baseball State Playoffs. The visiting Vikings came away with a 2-1 decision.
Louisburg High School senior standout Chase Ragland played the final game of his Warriors’ career last Friday evening. But he won’t be going too far -- Ragland has signed a letter-of-intent to continue his diamond career at Louisburg College.

FRANKLINTON — A 500-gallon gas leak at a propane company shut down U.S. 1 and sent residents scrambling for shelter at Town Hall, but no injuries were reported.
Franklinton fire crews received a call at 9:16 a.m. Thursday after a damaged valve caused gas to spew out of a McCracken Propane & Oil tank at the building at 3176 U.S. 1.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a handful of home break-ins around the county.
In the first case, Percy Glasco, of Winston Street near Rustic Ridge, reported on May 7 that someone broke into his home and stole more than $1000 in guns and a television set.
The suspect pried open a front door to gain entry.

Franklin County’s airport authority decided that it would use legal means to recover outstanding debt.
County attorneys, airport staff and board members said there are three accounts at least two years old that account for $3,500 owed to Triangle North Executive Airport.
While the amount is minor, airport commissioners said its the principle involved.

Louisburg police and Franklin County school officials are investigating an alleged plot by up to three students at Terrell Lane Middle School to attack their teacher with knives.
Although stressing that the investigation is in its early stages, authorities on Friday confirmed that two large knives, one of which was described as a small machete, were found in the bookbag of one of the students.
