After getting an earful from county emergency responders, Franklin County commissioners communicated in unison, voting unanimously to move forward with a $9.6 million contract to improve the county’s emergency communications system.
“I know it costs a lot of money,” said Commissioner Harry Foy, “but this is a something that would be worth every penny
“This is one of the few things we can do as a board that can help everyone in the county.”
Franklin County Girl Scouts beat the heat this week during summer camp.
Later this year, Girl Scout organizers could know whether they’ve beaten the economy.
If not, the Franklin County Girl Scouts unit could lose their Homestead site on N.C. 39, the location for summer day camps and other events.

The Franklin County Cooperative Extension is losing another stalwart as agent Crystal Smith is heading to direct Hertford County’s department.
Smith has been in Cooperative Extension for 14 years, staying close to her Franklin County roots with stints in Warren and Granville counties before joining Franklin County’s team as the 4-H and Youth Development agent in 2003.
Franklin County Parks and Rec volleyball camp attendees got a surprise treat Thursday as Ronald McDonald showed up at Royal Elementary School to entertain them and teach them about the benefits of exercise. Parks and Rec staff arranged the visit and Director Oliver Greene said the goal was to share with campers the health benefits of making good, healthy choices.

The equipment needed to perform digital mammography has arrived at Franklin Regional Medical Center and staff members have been in training this week to learn to use it to its full capability. Digital mammography is much like the traditional film screen mammography. Both use X-ray to generate images of the breast; however the new technology can now convert X-ray energy into a digital image.
A Louisburg man was taken to WakeMed following this head-on collision Wednesday afternoon, but none of the injuries were life-threatening. Trooper P.L. Clayton said Jonathan E. MacQuin, 29, was driving a Mercury sport utility vehicle on N.C. 56 three miles east of Louisburg at about 2:40 p.m. when he crossed the center line. He crashed head-on into a Buick driven by 85-year-old William Thomas Crawley.
The North Carolina Fellowship of Holy Churches, Inc. held its first annual Holy Convocation, June 4-6, which convened at Praise Tabernacle Holy Church, Inc. in Roxboro. The theme was “Building Relationships, Friendships and Fellowships.”
Elder Jorge Martinez was ordained to the office of Elder, becoming the first Hispanic pastor of the convocation to be ordained an Elder. He is the pastor of Centro Cristiano La Red in Raleigh.
INDIANOLA, Iowa - Dwight Dop, 56, died Saturday, June 19, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Services were held Tuesday, June 22, at the First Assembly of God Church in Indianola, with Pastor John Meaux and Pastor Guy Puthoff officiating.

It is amazing how a melody, a song can affect our spiritual well-being. For that reason, I think music has, for a long time, played a big part in the lives of human beings.

Boy, that was an idea out of the blue.
The idea that Green Hills Country Club could be purchased by the county for a public recreation area caught most everyone I know by total surprise.
Thus far, we’re not sure how viable this idea is but it raises interesting questions.
GOOD MORNING: Despite supposedly fail-safe measures proposed by County Attorney Darnell Batton, action by the County Commissioners in backing a bid for a $156,000 grant to reopen a Youngsville area restaurant damaged in a tractor-trailer accident is drawing fire, and with good reason too, in my opinion.
The biggest problem facing North Carolina today is trust. We don’t trust those in leadership positions in business, in our churches or in most any sector of life, but nowhere is that breach of trust more evident than in government. We don’t trust that public officials will do the right thing for the common good.

Both of my parents are interred in a two-person above-ground mausoleum at Oakwood Cemetery. Because the mausoleum is made of marble, it is very porous and gets dirty easily.

BUNN -- Increased temperatures aren’t the only Summer Rite of Passage in Bunn. You know it’s summertime when youngsters flock to the annual Bunn High School Wildcats Football Camp -- a tradition in the community for over two decades.
RALEIGH -- Wake Technical Community College volleyball head coach George Tsai announces that Brandy Driver of Louisburg is one of five new recruits for the 2010 season.
Driver was a varsity player at Bunn High School, where she received a Most Valuable Player award, and also played for the Hurricanes’ club volleyball team.
