Lightning struck the steeple of Rock Spring Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon, but quick response by the Bunn and Louisburg fire departments limited the damage to the steeple (above). The Rev. BUNN — A Bunn High student was killed Thursday by her estranged boyfriend, a week after deputies tried to arrest him on charges that he assaulted and threatened her.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrived at 664 Ferrells Bridge Road at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
Elvira Hernandez, 17, was found dead from two gunshot wounds – one to the back, another to the head.

Contractor asked to detail work history
MBAJ Architecture is asking the low bidder on the new elementary school project to detail its work history. Company spokesman Richard Thompson has said there is no problem in doing that. A letter was sent to Thompson of J.M. Thompson Co. of Raleigh on May 8 from MBAJ architect Jon Long, who is overseeing existing construction projects for the Franklin County schools’ system.

FRANKLINTON — Town officials are expected to discuss police powers this Tuesday after the police chief hired a K-9 officer without board approval. In August, Chief Ray Gilliam and staff proposed pairing a police dog with traffic officer Michael Dunlap. The department planned to use $200,000 in drug seizure money to pay for the dog and its upkeep.

Franklinton budget proposed at $2.9M
