LOUISBURG -- Coach Al Bolton didn’t hesitate to call upon freshman Chase Ragland to pitch in the pressure-packed situation of the Class 1-A State Playoffs.
REIDSVILLE -- Two years ago, Franklinton suffered a resounding loss at Western Guilford in the Class 2-A Girls Soccer State Playoffs.
At the time, FHS coach Deran Coe hoped the setback would help his team realize that improvement was in order if the Lady Rams were to compete with some of the state’s elite programs on the 2-A level.
After one year away, Lester Wilder realized how much he missed working with young people.
And so a living legend will be returning to the Franklinton High School Gymnasium next season.

FRANKLINTON -- During preseason drills once summer, Chris Griffin felt an instant pain in his right thumb after engaging the tackling sled.
“I think it’s broken’’ Griffin told an assistant coach for the Franklinton High School football team.
Griffin wasn’t joking -- the thumb was hanging sideways of his hand and was obviously dislocated.

FRANKLINTON -- With only three returning players on the roster, recruiting was the biggest off-season priority for Louisburg College first-year head volleyball coach Holly Mitchell.
She didn’t have to travel far to find one of her six incoming recruits to date.
ZEBULON -- The Huntsville Stars utilized a big inning for the second straight game, and disposed of the Carolina Mudcats once again 10-2 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.
GREENVILLE -- Kyle Roller drove in a career-high six runs going 3-for-4 with a home run as No. 30 East Carolina finished off the series sweep of UCF Sunday afternoon 13-8 inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
BUNN -- The Bunn High School Basketball Camps are scheduled for June 25-28 at the Bunn Dome.

Lightning struck the steeple of Rock Spring Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon, but quick response by the Bunn and Louisburg fire departments limited the damage to the steeple (above). The Rev. BUNN — A Bunn High student was killed Thursday by her estranged boyfriend, a week after deputies tried to arrest him on charges that he assaulted and threatened her.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrived at 664 Ferrells Bridge Road at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
Elvira Hernandez, 17, was found dead from two gunshot wounds – one to the back, another to the head.

MBAJ Architecture is asking the low bidder on the new elementary school project to detail its work history. Company spokesman Richard Thompson has said there is no problem in doing that. A letter was sent to Thompson of J.M. Thompson Co. of Raleigh on May 8 from MBAJ architect Jon Long, who is overseeing existing construction projects for the Franklin County schools’ system.

FRANKLINTON — Town officials are expected to discuss police powers this Tuesday after the police chief hired a K-9 officer without board approval.
In August, Chief Ray Gilliam and staff proposed pairing a police dog with traffic officer Michael Dunlap. The department planned to use $200,000 in drug seizure money to pay for the dog and its upkeep.
The state Labor Department is investigating the county’s second workplace fatality in two months. The most recent case is an April 10 incident where Francisco Baez Morales, 20, was killed at Franklin Veneers on N.C. 56 East in Franklinton.
Visitation for Elvira Hernandez will be at Strickland Funeral Home, Louisburg, on Sunday, May 13, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be Monday, May 14, at Bunn Memorial Gardens. Miss Hernandez, 17, was killed in a domestic violence shooting May 10. She was a junior at Bunn High School. See the obituary link on the Times website for family information.

FRANKLINTON — Town staff has proposed a $2.9-million spending plan that keeps a static tax rate, but would raise utility fees. The budget, which has yet to be approved, keeps the tax rate at 68 cents per $100 valuation.

FRANKLINTON — Town Manager Sharon Garner is expected to return to work on a limited basis in a few weeks. Garner has been on unpaid medical leave since the first of April after preparing for and having surgery to repair a damaged rotator cuff.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today (Saturday, May 12) in the chapel of Minshew Funeral Home, with Dr. Lawrence Pounds and Mrs. Mary Pounds officiating.
