LOUISBURG -- Parents of a Wake Preparatory Academy parents claim the school and a teacher are guilty of corporal punishment and hazing, as well as indirect activity that harmed their child and others.The case -- which seeks a jury trial and at least $75,000 in damages -- remains pending in Franklin County Civil Superior Court."Kids should be safe, and feel safe, in schools," said Durham attorney Daniel Meier, who filed the lawsuit on May 28 on behalf of the student's father.

1305.Franklinton student dies in car crash on way to school
FRANKLINTON -- The State Highway Patrol said speed was a factor in an accident that killed one Franklinton High student and injured another on Tuesday.According to authorities, Timothy H. Coley, 18, was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta east on Cedar Creek Road at about 7:30 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle.It traveled across the westbound lane and off the shoulder, hitting a fence near Hicks Road.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested two Spring Hope men accused of stabbing a man during an attack at a Zebulon area store. Deputies responded to the Bunn Fire Department the evening of Sept. 26 to find Gregory Denton suffering from a stab wound to the chest. His injuries did not prove fatal.

LOUISBURG -- Aside from the four years he spent as a student at Guilford College, James Collier has lived in Louisburg his entire life. Collier, who now serves as the Louisburg High School Athletic Director/girls basketball coach, is considered one of the area’s top LHS historians. But even Collier couldn’t remember the last time LHS won a Girls Christmas Tournament. If it has ever happened.

KINSTON - Gerald Perry Brewer, 73, of Kinston went to be with his LORD on October 28, 2008. Gerald was born October 24, 1935 in Louisburg, N.C. He served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police officer. He served the state of North Carolina and his community in the N.C. Highway Patrol, retiring after 30 years of service.

1315.MARKING 40 YEARS!
Louisburg High School Class of 1974 celebrated its 40th Class Reunion recently, at the Embassy Suites in Cary. About 63 people were in attendance. The kickoff event for the weekend was a meet and greet on Friday night. Some classmates had not seen each other in over 40 years. A banquet meal was served Saturday night, followed with entertainment by classmates. After the entertainment, it was a night of laughter, dancing and good times.

1318.Mills High Class of ‘57 gets together
The 1957 class of Mills High School had their 56th reunion on May 7 at Maple Springs Baptist Church.  The classmates gathered at 2 p.m. to reminisce, look at old school pictures and welcome their guests.  Eddie Stallings, mascot of their class, and Howard Stallings, principal, and their wives attended.  Bobbie Currie, glee club director, and her daughter attended for the first time.  At 5 p.m., dinner was served followed by a program led by co-chairmen Clint Chaney, Wilbur and Shirley Southall.

1319.Perry’s School gone wild
A Franklin County resident has called into question the leadership of a community group that’s proposing to turn an old school property into a halfway house-style rehab center for the recently incarcerated. Franklin County officials sold the Gold Sand Elementary School property, formerly the Perry School, to the Perry’s School Alumni Association in 2006, with the stipulation that it be used for community events and purposes that continue to exhibit the cultural and historical significance of the facility.

BUNN - Even for old-timers, it's hard to debate the fact that, from an athletic standpoint, this is one of the best senior classes ever produced at Bunn High School.That assessment was evident during Tuesday's Bunn Athletic Awards Ceremony, which was held at the Johnny Alford Auditorium on the BHS campus.Bunn's top student-athletes were honored in each sport, and plenty of the honors went to upperclassmen -- including the school's most prestigious awards.BHS senior Tevin Perry was tabbed as the Male Athlete of the Year after excelling in basketball, football and baseball this past season.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The first-year Franklin County Chargers youth football program recently defeated the Wake Forest Alpha Dogs by a 22-7 score in the Carolina Elite State Championship Tournament.The victory capped a strong inaugural season for the Chargers in the 12-under varsity division.Jamie Murray served as the head coach, with Dale Spicer, Durand Mills and Jason Napier helping out as assistants.

A Franklinton woman was killed this week following a crash in Wake County. According to reports, Krystal Strother, 28, was driving long I-540 when she lost control of the 2003 Honda she was driving. The car swerved to the left, went underneath median cables and she drove into the eastbound lanes and oncoming traffic.

LOUISBURG -- The attorney defending a Wake Forest woman against charges that she killed two Franklin County women in a wreck is calling upon the services of experts.As such, the case against Jennifer Baker Pearce was continued until a subsequent Franklin County Superior Court session -- May 13.According to authorities, the 44-year-old Pearce was driving north on U.S. 401 near Bennett Perry Road the afternoon of Nov. 29 when she crossed the center line.

Faye spent many years working in the newspaper industry at The Daily Press and then went on to work as an administrative assistant at Eastern State Hospital both in Williamsburg, VA.

PILOT -- Parks and recreation staff and Franklin officials cut the ribbon on the county's only dog park.Back in May, commissioners agreed to move forward with an acre dog facility at Pilot Lions park in southern Franklin County, tasking staff with using up to $130,000 to accomplish the task.Ground was broken last summer and the ribbon cutting and official opening was March 20.

Literally, the hits just keep coming this season for former Louisburg High School gridiron standout Lakeem Perry. Perry, a true frosh linebacker at Catawba College, has been saluted as the South Atlantic Conference’s Defensive Freshman of the Year. Perry recorded 74 tackles this fall, including nine for a loss. He also recovered a fumble and broke up three passes while helping the Indians to a 6-4 overall record -- meaning Catawba now has compiled 14 consecutive winning campaigns.

Franklin County sheriff's deputies concluded the second phase of a six-month drug operation, arresting more than a dozen people, racking up nearly 90 charges.Phase One of Operation Impact resulted in 15 arrests and 86 drug charges last month, focusing on areas in and around Franklinton, Youngsville and Wake Forest.On Oct. 18, authorities announced they arrested 16 people on 88 felony drug charges in Phase II.

The town of Louisburg’s Electric Department has been honored for having no lost-time accidents during 2008 by Electri-Cities, the town’s source of electrical energy. It’s not exactly a first-time honor for the local electrical workers. Louisburg’s department has had only two years since 1981 when there was time lost because of an accident. This year, electric department employees were presented a safety plaque during the regular Monday night town council meeting.
