Avent wins 800th career game
RALEIGH -- No. 9 North Carolina State University certainly had to work for head coach Elliott Avent’s 800th career victory, prevailing 7-6 over Virginia with a wild walk-off finish after two Wolfpack comebacks to win the series Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Avent is a native of Aventon who graduated from Northern Nash High School.

GREENVILLE -- Junior Tyler Joyner tossed his first career complete game, striking out a career-best eight batters en route to No. 30 East Carolina University’s (18-8, 3-2 C-USA) 12-2 win over UAB (17-11, 2-3) last Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium in Conference USA baseball action.
Joyner is a lefty from Nash County who prepped at Northern Nash High School.

Rain wasn’t about to dampen the spirits of the youngsters, who were excited to get on to the field for the first time this spring. Among the games was a T-Ball contest between the Bulls and the Lugnuts. Participants in this matchup included (above) Ben Hoyle of the Bulls.

Youngsville firefighters work to knock down a fire that damaged the back of this home at 120 Thomerson Lane. Firefighters from Youngsville, Bunn and Louisburg responded to the fire which appeared to have started out back near a four-wheeler (photo below). Firefighters said the blaze may have been ignited by a gas can near the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

A fire behind a home on Thomerson Lane burned this four-wheeler down to its base metals on Thursday. Firefighters were still trying to determine the cause of the fire that damaged the back of the home, which sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

The county’s Democratic Party has recommended that a man with long-time county service fill a vacant commissioner seat.
Democratic Party Chair Armenta Eaton is scheduled to recommend on Monday night that former Cooperative Extension Director Cedric Jones be appointed to the District 2 seat — a post vacated in early March by Penny McGhee.

County Commissioners set to ponder revised solar farm rules
Commissioners will be asked for a second time on Monday to approve a process by which solar farms can be considered for development in Franklin County.
After fielding questions from concerned residents, commissioners asked planning staff to take another pencil to its plans to modify the Unified Development Ordinance so that it would address solar farms.

State unemployment rate is released
RALEIGH — North Carolina gained 8,300 jobs over-the-month and the state’s unemployment rate decreased to 9.9 in February, down 0.3 of a percentage point from a revised January rate of 10.2 percent.
“North Carolina continues to gain jobs,” said N.C. Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Dale Carroll. “The state has gained 112,000 jobs over the past two years.
